View Full Version : Why use 4464 for Blank DVD Size?

Always wondered this. I have tried 6 different media that are all 4489 in size. So I set DVDShrink, Recode, etc to 4487 or 4488. If you use deep or advanced analysis all works out. You get an extra 20 meg this way. Just wondered why 4464 is the default for most programs.

Your size estimations would never allow your copies to be backed up to DVD+R. They're too big. 19MB isn't big it's like 00000000000.1%.

The 20MB is just a safety margin when Deep analysis is not used. ;)

thanks for the responses. I any case I never use +r so no need to worry there. i don't know why anyone uses +r anyway....to many compatibility problems from what I read. I just hate wasting space to be honest. Wonder if autoshrinkiso will work with other than 4464?

Why use +r?
FYI- Because it has better error correction, it's faster and no compatibility issues except for the oldest standalone players.

Not the oldest....4 people on my street bought DVD players in the past 1.5 yrs. none play +r. One is a toshiba, the other a sony, the other a pioneer and I forget the other. I thought this was interesting. How better is the error correction. I have burned over 50 -r's. Nevr a coaster. Even with data added in I have never burned a coaster and I just have a LG 4040B.

Faster is really irrelevant unless you constantly upgrade your burner. Hardly and 8x media anyway. I prefer the extra space myself.

just use custom size in DVDShrink and be done with it.

Well that is eactly what I do....

The other DVD player that would not read +r was a neighbours van...one of those built in the roof players.

I also know of players in my neighbourghood that wont play +R plus older Playstation IIs so I stick to -R 'cause it works everywhere!

I do not know the history of dvd...why is -r used "every where".

I am curious as to how it was chosen first.

There is a group called the "DVD Forum" which invented or designed the Specs. They don't acknowledge the +R standard as far as I know...

Some cheap discs have playback problems at the end of the disc so in some cases it would be better to lower the size to something like 4200 MB just to be sure that the copy will be able to play to the end of the movie. But it's better to avoid buying low quality media.

Since your talking about media, Best Buy has 100 pack spindles of TDK 4X +R for $99. They come up as Ricoh under dvd decrypter. Burn at 8X with the plextor 708A.
