View Full Version : Capture AC3 via SP-DIF

Hi all,
hope you can help... I'd like to capture AC3 (or "Dolby Digital 5.1") streams from an DVB-Receiver in order to burn the multichannel sound on CD or DVD.
Can this be done with common (PCM-based) soundcards? If yes, what format should I use in the capturing audio editor, or is there a special program that handles AC3 (or dts) streams by itself correctly?
Sorry, I didn't find any related thread on this point and no FAQs...
Thanks and cheers,
I.

Hi again,
seems, there is an answer already in another part of this forum ( http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25650 ). I'll give it a try first and "re-open" this thread if the mentioned method still won't work for me...
Thanks anyway!

It is no any problem to record AC3/DD 2.0 or 5.1 from sat delivery.
It can be done by SkyView or MyTheatre2.76 program.
MyTheatre is working with majority card and SkyView is working only with SS2 card. The main reason from DVD with AC3 audio is that AC3 strem is delivered as Private Stream BD so not every demuxing program will correctly separate this. I already mentioned about it in this section , so if you have any doubts ask me about details

Hi eb,
thanks for the hints. But I have to record from an external settop box as I do the recording with a notebook. So, to capture the video using an external MPEG2 box is no problem, but "of course", these devices only allow analog input. So I'd have to capture the AC3 stream via S/P-DIF, which unfortunately only works with a few soundcards (none of them with USB as far as I found out yet), and then the AC3 stream would have to be edited in order to synchronize it with the video...
No idea if I'll ever manage this using free or "affordable" software...
Thanks anyway,
I.
@imel6: could you specify the address a bit more?

Although not detailed, it may be helpful--particularly if you run into SCMS problems with your AC3 stream. Lately, I've been capturing with ATV2000 instead of vdub. I posted a few notes on the KX Project forum several months ago. You can search there. There are also some links to a DIY toslink to coax converter there somewhere. For about $10 in parts and a $40 factory refurb Audigy card (using CD digital input) you can be setup! DSPguru sent me some source that shows how Besplit -fix works to create an AC3 file and I'd like to write a plugin to fix the stream on the fly, but haven't had time to work on it.
