does anyone know about layers? i.e when i decrypt using dvd decrypter, it will copy and save to hd but if dvd has 2 layers i cannot record a backup to a dvd-r. Any help out there?

Welcome to the forum. A quick check with the search button returns hits to numerous to count. A basic understanding of dvd layouts and possibilities is probably needed Look here (http://www.doom9.org) for information and guides.

@craig riley: You mean a two layer disc with one layer on one side, right?
Rip both sides. There a two options:
Burn each one on one DVDR and you've two and the same quality as the original one, or
You use dvd2one with the joinoption (I think this is only for movieonly backups...).
Also You can use DVDShrink and reauthor your DVD by adding the two titles and transcode it to fit on one DVDR.
If You want to keep the menu, it will be a long long story and for this You should read first the guides (http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm).
If you meant a normal DVD with two layers on one side (DVD9), the you have many options to backup them.
