View Full Version : DVD style menu for disc of AVI files?

I have 19 episodes of a tv show I recorded with my tv tuner that are currently AVI files. I have a Lite-On LVD-2001 that plays AVIs, so keeping that in mind, here's what I want to do:

I want to burn all 19 episodes to a single dvd as AVI files (total they're 3.71gb in size, so that's not an issue), but I want a dvd-style menu when the disc loads so you can easily choose an episode. I tried making the disc in Sonic MyDVD, but the program wants to convert them all to mpeg format. Here's what I want to know:

Is it possible to make a menu like I've described and burn the files to a single dvd without converting them?

Is it possible to tell Sonic not to convert the files to mpeg format for this disc?

Is this just an impossible idea without some software that costs $5,000?

I apologize if this is answered somewhere obvious, I've been looking for about four hours and haven't found an answer.

Take a look at "DVD WORKSHOP"

The .AVIs have to be converted to MPG for DVD. DVDs only work with MPG2 or MPG1.

Yes, I know. However, I have a dvd player that can play AVI files, hence why I want to use just one disc and not convert the files.

I doubt the player (actually, the firmware in the player) is designed to switch between formats on the fly. In other words, once you insert the disk, it's either in DVD mode (to play spec-compliant DVD video disks) or it's in free-form data mode to play back MP3's and AVI's.

If there is a solution, it'd almost certainly be specific to that player. Check with the manufacturer (check their web site if they have one) and see if they provide a means. Heck, it might be something as simple as an HTML page that links to the AVI files.

On the other hand, I don't know that much about AVI's. Maybe there is a defacto AVI wrapper standard comparable to the DVD spec for wrapping MPG, though I've never heard of one.

Alright, I'll go check on their website. Unfortunately you're probably right, my idea probably won't work. Thanks for your help.
