I have noticed that for some reason, when I setup virtualdub with some jobs to encode my HDTV videos, it always crashes at the very end. I can usually just continue to the second pass, but sometimes the file size is weird.

I use DVD2AVI and avisynth.
The only thing avisynth does is resize the video from 1920x1080 down.

then in virtualdub I have audio off and I am using Xvid RC1
The same thing happened with Beta 1 and 2
I am using unrestricted with pretty much everything off.
VHQ1, ultrahigh, no B frames, turbo

any ideas how I can prevent these crashes?

try using pvastrumento to repair the recorded mpeg2 file before further precessing. here is the link to obtain the program http://www.offeryn.de/dv.htm. open the gui of the program,load the file you want to encode and then use "make ps" option at the default settings. This helps with correcting of the signal loss problems. The file you get is repaired. Process it you should't have the virtualdub crash problem any more.

You could use Virtualdub Mod instead. It has some error recovery ability.

you're right, but at the moment it is the best idea i have. There is a progtam called mpeg repair. It can repair broken mpeg2s. Might be of some help. Heard that works just fine. You can get a demo after a problematic procedure at the home page (sorry i don't have one) One thing is sure. the fault is at mpeg2's side and not vdub's

@ enrico NG,

I have two suspects in yuor case;

maybe Xvid should be replaced by another codec or most probable , the place where crash happens it is place where audio stream is changing from for example AC3 to normal stereo.
You can test it using PVAStrumento and use it to separate this parts of record
hope that this help at least to understand the problem.

i used xvid and divx5. it doesn't matter. The subject of audio format change is also out of question. It doesn't apply here. I needed a way to correct the broken frames before the further process.
I use pvastrumento and works just fine, it doesn't belong to the most stable programs, though. Occassional vdubmod crashes still happen, although they are rare. The longer the processed file the more likely they become.
