today new official versions of the gpac tools were released!
you can find the complete changelog here (http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/gpac/gpac/Changelog?rev=1.40&sortby=date&view=auto)
maybe the most important change is that mp4box now handles avi files with b-frames right when muxing into mp4 (so 3ivx isnt the only one handling this right anymore)
also mp4box now includes support for xmt-a
osmo4 also handles .3gp files now and has a new ffmpeg based decoder plugin (supporting amr and h.263 decoding)

Apologies if this is a silly newbie question, but where (if anywhere) do I download the binaries?

nowhere till now as because of license issues there cant be any binaries spread by the gpac guys
you have to make your own compiles
but thanks to rjamorim you can also grap 0.1.1 from rarewares (http://rarewares.hydrogenaudio.org/mp4.html)
maybe we will see 0.1.2 there too soon

mp4box is either crashing or freezing when I try to import a video with B-Frames (XviD) :(
Assuming I manage this, can I use mp4tools to mux an AAC track to the mp4 created by mp4box?
P.S.: nevermind, I found out that faac can do this... :search:

for muxing .aac files you can also use mp4creator or mp4ui, but the important thing is that you dont mux avi files with b-frames with these two tools!

BTW I'm also having problems paying aac audio using Osmo4. I even reinstalled the aac plug-in to no avail.
But right now my problem seems to try to get the B-frames to work...

Some issues and work arounds:
1. mp4box doesn't like avis with 2 b-frames (might be also other types)
---Solution: Mux your avi to mp4 using 3ivx DirectShow filters, and use the muxed mp4 files as source for mp4box.
2. Osmo4 doesn't like content having xvid+b-frames
---Solution: No perfect solutions. You can force Osmo4 to use ffmpeg for decoding but output is still somewhat b0rked.

I have too problems muxing a XviD.avi with 2 b-frames and qpel with MP4Box. Latexx solution for this problem works. I can't seek in the file created with MP4Box using xine ( could be xine fault). With mplayer and 3ivX DShow Filter I can seek. I can seek in a MP4 file only created with 3ivX using xine.

mp4box still crashes when I try to import an avi with only one B-frame.

hm i guess the b-frame handling of mp4box isnt stable enough atm
i guess its safer to only use the 3ivx muxer for muxing avi with b-frames atm
