I have TMPGenc DVD Author with the AC3 plugin and DVD-Lab. I want to copy a whole DVD that has 2-channel PCM audio, but it takes up way too much space. If I could convert the audio to AC3 while maintaining the rest of the DVD structure, that would be great.

I have some experience with Ifoedit and some other utilities, but am no means an expert on DVD structure.

What is the simplest way to accomplish this task? If I need a particular DVD authoring program to demux the video and PCM to elementary streams and that can put it back together exactly the same way, that is fine too

mmmm...well I'd think you'd need to reauthor the DVD in the same way as people who use the "big 3", i.e. if it's multi-PGC then you'd need to use Scenarist to reauthor (possible with Maestro, but I've never tried it). And then follow it up by using IFOUpdate. You are changing the nature of an audio stream, which isn't usually the norm, so I'm not entirely this method would work properly (specifically the IFOUpdate step)...but worth a shot.

BTW you might be best off using Sonic Foundry Softencode for re-encoding AC3 - free/cheap solutions provide output that fits the price.

Well just let Tmpg encode the audio to Ac3. Or use another encoder and in track properties replace the audio by hitting the browse button and choosing the ac3 track.
