Splitter?

Quick question. I know I'm going to get flamed. (puts on flame suit) what exactly does the splitter do? I know it's supposedly splits the streams into separate streams but does it do any decoding at all? I see Gabest's splitters and such. HELP this question has been bothering me! I've searched google and forums with no success. :scared:

Wrong forum ! ( Well since you didn't know what a splitter was for, it's kind of normal :) )

When you make a multimedia file, you put all your data in a file. But you have to organize the way you put data in that file, because, for example, you want to keep synchronisation between the audio and the video. So you have to use a container. There are several sort of containers : AVI, OGM, MKV, etc...

These containers can contain different types of data. For example, you may find in a mkv video data, several audio tracks, and multiple subtitles.

When you read such a file, you have to know how the data is arranged inside the container. That's the role of the splitter. It will basically take the file, separate it in different parts, in order to allow the other filters to continue the processing. Hence, the video codec will only have to decode video data, wheras audio will be decoded by the proper audio codec.
