Looks like Angelo Farina did help them a lot, also other professors around the world, which makes Waves very respectable.
From the manuals:
"Waves IR-1 is a convolution-based reverb processor that gives you total control of the reverb properties. Impulse Response Convolution is the process of forcing a certain acoustic signature on any incoming audio signal. An Impulse Response is created by feeding a very short pulse (Impulse) into a linear system and measuring the resultant output (Response).
The Impulse Responses Another major part of the product is the Impulse Response (IR) Library, offering a set of high-definition IR’s. Waves paid special attention to this part of the product because it is the basic Reverb Sound of the IR-1. We established a special recording setup and method specifically for IR recording, which provides exceptional signal-to-noise ratio, very low harmonic distortion, a wide frequency bandwidth (20Hz-32kHz) and offers optimal depth and dimension. This measuring method was developed by Waves in collaboration with Professor ANGELO FARINA of the University of Parma. The basis of the acoustic capture method was documented and presented in the AES Paper Recording Concert Hall Acoustics for Posterity. For more information about this method, check this link: http://pcfarina.eng.unipr.it/Public/Papers/183-AES24.PDF"

"IDR is Waves’ proprietary noise-shaped dithering system co-developed by Waves with MICHAEL GERZON, a
world authority in psychoacoustics. The IDR component in Waves processors can be used to maximize the
digital resolution of the resulting audio. IDR’s design is a result of Mr. Gerzon’s long-term research dating
back to 1982 with many of the other leading experts in digital resolution enhancement technology"

Waves IR-1 is $$$. Yes: One gets nice impulse responses on 2 CD's, but they are all in a special format (not *.wav) and cannot be exportet.

If you want to use the methods described in the quoted paper, you can use CoolEdit or Adobe Audition, and use Farina's "Convolve with clipboard" plugin (www.aurora-plugins.com) which is definitely cheaper...

For FIR processing / convolution, both under Bidule and Audio Mulch, I suggest that you use Christian Knufinke's freeware SIR VST-plugin (http://www.knufinke.de/sir/index_en.html). You can use arbitrary long impulse responses, with very little computational load, thanks to the efficient partitioned convolution algorithm. Most experts also agree that it also delivers outstanding quality.

Cheers,
Andreas

kempfand I agree,Waves r $$$,but about the extension:
IR-1 supports *.wav or *.wir & all reverberation it's 32 bit.
aurora plugs r cheaper,I know that, but this is so nice package & works very well.I can't afford to pay $$$ for Waves but I'm lucky to know some people that have big bucks(Pro Recording Studio) & they have the plugs. All I can say is Waves Diamond Bundle is probably one of the best collection of plugins that will give you complete control over your recordings or whatever you do.
