DVD Shrink 3.1.4 is out Jan 25

Booktype DVD-ROM is checked by default, disabled if unsupported.

Fixed bug where deep analysis could still be forced on.

Added preferences option for "built-in software renderer" which solves video preview problems on some systems.

Preview window now tries to play only audio streams which are available in a title.

Changes to file reading code, can enable overlapped I/O and specify read block size by options in preferences.

Automatically stop video preview when using Start/End control in re-author mode.

Fixed problem of incorrectly reported burning speeds.

Prefix drive letter to list of available burning devices.

Fixed bug where analysis results file could be saved to the wrong filename after "deep analysis before backup", so the results were not cached when opening the same DVD a second time.

Some performance improvements, analysis and encoding approx. 6% faster on test systems.

DVDShrink 3.1.4 has a new ripping engine which improves performance (well it should). 26% faster in my limited testing. http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31641

Does ripping engine means ripping the DVD to HD or just meaning the analysis and encoding (from hd to hd)?

Basically it's more constant rip when it's doing deep analysis and encoding. Before it was the dvd-rom wasn't feeding it fast enough so the CPU was waiting. Now if you have a fast enough dvd-rom in many instances your CPU could be the bottleneck. Not everyone will enjoy faster encoding times but if you have a semi-decent setup you definitely will.

It takes me 2hours+ for analysing and encoding a DVD (from files on the HD). It also takes me ~1hour for the DVD Decrypting process. And ~1hour for burning at 1x (for safety).

Well, maybe I can save some times by ripping the DVD with DVD Shrink and Anal&Enc it at the same time.. gota try that..

I've never had shrink take longer then 1hr (anl-enc). On average it takes 33min. If I read from disc it usually takes a little longer (maybe 5min). Decrypting on average 15-20min(dvd9), 8-10(dvd5).

Do you have an older system, dvd-rom, etc? The reason I ask is because your times seem a little excessive.

Unlike 3.0b5, the new versions of DVDShrink report the combined time for both deep analysis and transcoding. My times (2.4 GHz P4, daemon tools mounted ISO, kinda slow hard drive) range from 50 to 75 minutes depending on the original.

I believe DVDShrink is more IO bound than processor bound, so a faster or slower processor won't make that much difference. I can see processing from a slower hard drive (though I can't imagine one much slower than mine) or from a speed-locked DVD-ROM taking 2 hours.

Has anyone experienced any image quality problems with DVD Shrink 3.1.4? I just tested it out on one of my anime DVDs and noticed after deep analysis, the image was completely blocky, albeit at 57%. For comparison, I loaded 3.0b5 and shrank the DVD and noticed the image quality was much better this time around. It wasn't as blocky, and although the compression was the same it was a lot more watchable.

I can't post any pics for comparision, but I was just wondering if anyone had the same experience with 3.1.4. Any thoughts?

I also noticed some image quality degradation with this latest version. I've always used ver 3.0 or prior and the quality looks great. I recently downloaded 3.1.4 and did a shrink a little over 90% but noticed quite a bit of pixelation in fast scenes which it shouldn't. I'm in the process of shrinking the same movie using 3.0 and will post my findings.

Can anyone respond to this or what's your experience quality-wise?

Great, I was worried I was the only one noticing this. Maybe people haven't been compressing at such high percentages. Anyway, I'm back to using 3.0b5.
