View Full Version : DVD skips on playback on last few chapters

Hi, I posted this in the newbie catogory, but havent got much response, perhaps it will be more appropriate to post this here.

Hi,

I have just recently bought a Gigabyte GO-W0404A dvd writer. I own a Pioneer DV-414 dvd player (standalone). I use Nero 6 and DVD shrink 3.1 to compress. I also have the latest firmware (although the last official ones came out last year, so they do seem old), I also run XP Professional.

Now the problem : When i burn a dvd on the pc, and play it back on the Pioneer, the movie plays perfectly until the last few chapters. It then begins to freeze and jump, making the rest of the film impossible to watch. I use Imation DVD-R's (2x). I have tried burning slower, faster, etc, but nothing helps. The logical thing to me would be the media. However, my brother burnt me some movies on his dvd writer (Hewlett Packard) with the same software and the same disks, and his play back 100% on my Pioneer, right to the end. I have taken my faulty disks over to his place and played it on his Sony standalone, and they play perfectly there, right the way through.
The skipping disks also play perfectly on my pc, with no jumping etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks

ps, i think Imation are Ricoh disks

I have seen this similar problem with my back up's. I'm using a Pioneer 106 DVDR and Memorex media. I'm going to try Ritek media (on order now).

I don't know if that will make a diff, but I'm hoping that it does.

I am having a similar problem, see:

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=67939
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=63459

I am now of the thinking that most older players, although they can play DVDr's, occasionally have trouble reading the data off of the disks at the required bitrate speeds thus resulting in pauses and audio drop-outs.

I haven't bought a new player to test this theory yet.

Please post if you find an alternative solution.

I've tried it on both a new and old player.

My new player is the Samsung HD931 (about 5 months old) and my old player is a Sony from about 7 years ago.

Both freeze at the same chapter.

I was also having this problem whenever trying to backup dual layer discs - after running the dvd through DVD Shrink, it would always freeze and skip if I skipped formward to ANYWHERE after where the layer change was. This happened whenever I didn't rip the dvd to HDD first (using DVD Decrypter). Now I just rip all my DVDs to HDD first before running it through DVD Shrink and it works fine

There seems to be a lot of people having the same problem, so try ripping the DVDs first and see if that helps

In fighting this problem I have had some success following the following rules. Always rip a disk before using Shrink or IC8, otherwise you're asking for trouble. Always rip all files, not just "movie only" using file mode. Don't rip using ISO mode and then burning the ISO. It' s tempting to do this with single layer but I've had standalones refuse to load discs burned like that. Always rip all files and then run them thru DVDSHRINK or IC8 and burn your disk using that application. Make sure your burner has the latest firmware.

If a disk is freezing and jumping at the end of a movie then obviously the laser is having a problem on the edge where the speed is the greatest. I have had some success by stopping the disc, removing it, pulling the power plug, wait 30 secs, start player and then chapter search to where you left off. It's important to pull the power plug.

different burners have different -r writing strategies and some are just better than others. Just make sure to update firmware reguarly

its poor quality media (as always)
your player doesn't cope as well as your brothers

get better quality media, of buy a more tolerant standalone.

there can always be combinations of media and recorder that won't work well (especially with some low-budget stuff like Imation)

Try a Verbatim DVD-R (or at least some other low-budget DVD-Rs) and see if it works then

I typically rip the disk with DVDShrink to my HDD (only the movie or with least compression). Then burn with nero.

If you're saying to rip the disk to your HDD first then use DVDShrink, what program do you use to rip?

DVD Decrypter

Do you use "file" mode or "IFO"?

I tired to rip using IFO but it doesn't allow me to open the files in DVDShink afterwards since it doesn't have a VIDEO_TS file?

I'm guessing rip in file mode?

Where can I find what settings should be used please.

you can check out the guides at ddloopings' site
http://www.dvdshrink.info/guides.php
there is a specific dvddecrypter tutorial you can follow.

another option is to rip it in ISO mode and mount the image on a virtual drive, eg, daemon tools, and in dvdshrink select open disk and navigate to this virtual drive

Having a similar problem.

My writer is a NEC ND-2500 which I bought a couple of weeks ago. I made a few backups which are ok. My machine then got infected and I wiped my hdd and reinstalled all the s/w.
I run Win XP Pro and am using DVD Decryptor to rip the files & DVD Shrink to shrink the files. Before being infected I then burned the dvds with Nero 6. After reinstalling the s/w, I think I must have installed Nero before DVD shrink as DVD Shrink now burns the dvd as well. I've only checked 6 of my backups but the ones done after infection all skip/freeze and the others play ok.

My plan of action is to:
1. Remove Nero and DVD Shrink then reinstall DVD shrink and then Nero and make another backup.
2. Turn off the screen saver and not use the pc whilst the backups are being done. I was probably trying to access the web or print covers when the original back ups were being created.

BTW I use Datasafe branded Ritek dvd-r (4x) for my backups.

another thing you can try is outputing to iso from dvdshrink(3.1.7 can do that) and then burn the iso with dvddecrypter. i know a freind who has to do that because isos burnt with nero skip on 1 of his dvd players(while on his other player they play fine).

also on another freinds he must burn no more than x2 even on good media for good results, thats a know problem with his burner though. :)

if it is just at the end of the movie/dvd then you should also try a different brand of dvdr, there have been some report of some bad ritek aswell.

"The logical thing to me would be the media."
no it's not cos:
"However, my brother burnt me some movies on his dvd writer (Hewlett Packard) with the same software and the same disks, and his play back 100% on my Pioneer, right to the end. no way out...means that your Gigabyte GO-W0404A dvd writer
and/or standalone Pioneer have problems.

and
"The skipping disks also play perfectly on my pc, with no jumping etc."
the dvd reader in the pc is more powerfull to read than standalones!

take you burner to technic assistence and with the media that "freeze"!
if they don't find any problem, take the standalone Pionner.

it's rare but can happen:
each drive is 50% guilty!

@Haja

Make sure you're using the latest versions of both Nero 6 and DVD Shrink: The author of Shrink recently fixed a bug that "may" have caused skipping on "certain set top boxes," while Nero 6 used to be guilty of resorting the DVD files in an incorrect manner, which would only mess with (you guessed it) CERTAIN set top boxes.

Make sure to format your backups as DVD-ROM if at all possible: Some set tops aren't as good at reading DVD+R as others -- or -Rs at all. But if the disk is formated as a DVD-ROM, nearly any player out there will be able to read it. (The option is availible as part of DVD Shrink's Nero Burning function, and well worth checking to the "on" position.)

It also wouldn't hurt to use a laser lens cleaner on your player, since dust buildups can make accurate readings tricky. Examining the disk surface for fingerprints, dust, ect. is also worth the time.

Hope this gives you something to go on!
