Burning Episodes from Damaged DVD

Have looked through this excellent site over my cool off period but have not found information (that I understand) to help me with this problem. Please feel free to direct me to a FAQ or the proper forum if this is discussed somewhere else.

Have XCopy Platinum which usually gives me the BUs I require but on about 10% of my DVDs it finds a sector error and exits. I have never seen a problem with viwing any of these DVDs. Have encountered same problem when using DVDShrink and similar tools.

Was able to get files onto HD with DVD Decrypter (a super program I wish I would have know about before buying XCopy) by ignoring errors and am able to view episodes via PowerDVD v 3.0. [Test DVD is As Time Goes By Complete Series 1 & 2 - Disk 1 ].

Is there a way to grab these vobs and write them to a viewable DVD. Would be happy to compress to one or to keep decompressed and copy to two DVDs. Thanks.

I don't have or use XCopy so I may be barking up the wrong tree here.
One thing to try (as long as you have a stack of hard disc space) is this.

Rip the disc to an ISO file with DVD Decryptor with errors ignored.
Download Daemon Tools (freeware, google will find) and install and run it. This makes a virtual drive on your machine - when you click on My Computer an extra DVD drive appears. Now click on the red icon that appears in the tray near the clock. Select Mount image and browse for your ripped image file. Your PC now thinks it has an extra DVDRom drive with your disc in it!

If you set XCopy to use the virtual drive as the source drive you should then be able to back up as normal I think.

Thanks for the quick response Nick, I like the Daemon Tools idea and attempted to give it a try except the only way I can get anything to disk is via files. Get 8-10 read errors but gets .vobs I can read with PowerDVD.

If I try to make an iso from the DVD (BTW Had to figure out "read" is to "create a new" not read an existing iso :confused: ) I get another kind of error: Positioning. Have the feeling this creates an unrecoverable offset since I get multiple errors after this happens (quit after 4 1/2 hours and it was only 50% done and had 319 errors and 1599 retries.

Any way to fold a bunch of .vobs into an iso?

Image Tools Classic.

You'll need to move your ripped files to a VIDEO_TS directory (example - c:\movie\VIDEO_TS), then image the parent directory (example - c:\movie). It's just part of how Image Tools works.

Once you have successfully ripped the files to your hard drive you can then use DVD Shrink to make them the correct size for a writable DVD and this is probably the simplest option.

Just set Shrink to look at the files on the hard drive rather than a DVD in the DVd drive.
