View Full Version : Scenarist quits @ 30% - How did you fix it?

I use the D2SRoBa/DVD2DVD/CCE/Scenarist combination. Everything worked fine work for many runs over a couple of months. One day, Scenarist just decides to start quiting around 30% on any average length feature movie.
If I run a small test clip, it runs through the entire process. I uninstalled DVD2DVD completely and reinstalled but did not fix the problem. I documented the problem and reported it in the problem log but did not get any resolution. I know I am not the only person to get this problem.
How did you guys fix this or are you stuck too?
512mb, amd xp2400, plenty of paging.

try it without subs

Fails without subs. Just ran another test to be sure. When I originally encountered this problem I thought it was associated with subs but after further testing back then, I was getting the same failure on titles with no subs.

Try cutting out the beginning scenes and the end credits. I use dvdshrink to do this first and then run it through. Works everytime.

no smiley, hey? Well then, I do the Maestro thing and it works but what a huge difference in personal time consumed to get the same results.
Remembering that I have the problem with no subs, what I don't understand and am trying to discern is truely how many people are using DVD2DVD with Scenarist and having no problems. The more time goes on it seems like I am the only person on planet Earth with Scenarist crashing or the most pugnacious and persistent! :)

Nope, mine crashes at 34% like clockwork. I have now tried the same few movies on a couple computers and the same thing on both.
Like you, I don't remember having these problems the first few times, however now it happens all the time on a movie that I compress to use the full 4.3X GB.
Anyway, DVD Maestro does work fine but the human interaction does add time.

Scmho,
Do What I suggested. Just cut out the beginning stuff and the end credits and it will work. I had the same problem and it drove me nuts trying to figure out why it always happened at 34%.

cutting off part of the movie is not an acceptable solution for me. If the idea is the problem is size related than what happens on a longer movie? You can't chop off a few chapters.
I did a movie a couple of days ago and it did make it through the Scenarist step without crashing. Unfortunately, I did not take note of the disc's characteristics like length and size. I'll keep trying and take better notes.
Still amazes me that either very few have this problem or can't take the time to tap in their experiences.
How about those who have no problem just post a note simply saying just that.
thx

You dont have to chop off anythign important. Just the first few seconds of the logos and stuff and then the end credits. Just want to point out that around 50% of the movies now days will crash if you dont strip out some of it.

it drove me nuts trying to figure out why it always happened at 34%.Did you ever come up with an explaination as to what is happening?
Thanks for clarifying your tip. I'll give it a try today.

I tried everything possible to fix those problems and the only solution was to use dvdshrink and cut out the beginning crap and the end credits. Hasn't failed me yet. Its also a bonus to cut those things out as you have more bits for better picture quality.

I too have been experiencing problems with DVD2SVCD 'crapping out' during Scenarist, however its not necessarily at any particular percentage point. DVD2SVCD had worked perfectly for me the first 30 times or so I used it. Now, more often than not, it will stop somewhere in the Scenarist stage. This especially sucks since I don't have Maestro to fallback on. But since I don't keep subtitles, I just re-do the whole movie with DVD2DVD-R and author in Scenarist manually (this method has yet to fail me)... but it is getting to be a real PITA... you know, doing it first with DVD2SVCD only to have to re-do it all over again with DVD2DVD-R the next day. In fact, lately I've just been going straight to DVD2DVD-R to avoid all the wasted time and effort. My best guess it that out of about the last 20 times I've tried to use DVD2SVCD its 'bombed out' maybe 75% of those times (always during Scenarist). (BTW, I'm from NTSC-land, if that matters.)

Thanks dimirass...
I just visited the above posted link and your solution there fixed the problem. In the future I intend to 'cut-out' the last scene (that split-second of 'black screen') using DVDshrink before starting DVD2SVCD and going to bed. Again thanks buddy...

OK guys. Maybe, no I know I am a hardhead :), but please humor me and hypothesis about why clipping a second off the end of the movie with Shrink makes Shrink's output palatable to Scenarist??

Read the post that dimirass posted above. It has some explanation that may be causing the problem.

I have had the problem on movies that have no errors as reported by Scenarist. It is elusive, so I am curious what can be the root cause. I've more or less given up on Scenarist and if it works fine, otherwise I just pick up where it fell on its face and finish it off with Maestro.

Well, I was having the exact same problem and all I did was change the ripping mode from vstrip to internal routines. I know it sounds weird but it worked. I'm using DVD Decrypter first then mounting as a virtual drive. I don't buy into the shrink method...

Okay, just finished with "Capturing the Friedmans". I used DVDShrink to remove the last couple of seconds (mostly a black screen) of the movie, then I processed it with DVD2SVCD (in DVD2DVD 'mode') and it got 'stuck' in Scenarist... no error message... it just stopped (device manager said DVD2SVCD was still using 99% CPU). Looking at the tracks in Scenarist, I noticed the last 2 tracks were out of sequence (first track 12 and then track 11). I tried clearing each individually but still nothing. Then I cleared both tracks and Scenarist finished the processing and the final movie is perfect. I don't know what was on tracks 11 and 12 but I can't find anything missing. Any guesses, anybody?
I usually rip separately with DVDDecrypter first before starting DVD2SVCD but sometimes I will use Tylo's plug-in for DVDDecrypter and I have also used the internal routines a few times. Though I've never really noticed a difference, I think the next time I run into another 'problem' movie, I'll try to switch ripping routines and see if that makes a difference.

Well, I was having the exact same problem and all I did was change the ripping mode from vstrip to internal routines. I remember that DVDDecrypter was enabled in DVD2DVD and I believe it is used when you check the vstrip option, at least that is what it seems based on the vstrip.ini contents. I'm not sure I understand why/how you are using DVDDecrypter if you have DVD2DVD do the ripping for you.

Well, I was using the big3 method and already had the ISO's on my HDD from before so I used those instead of re-ripping with DVD2DVD. I just mount with daemon tools and do the rest as usual.

I think vstrip is used to do the ripping if you select the vstrip option. It's only if you have the Tylo plug-in installed that the vstrip option will rip with DVDDecrypter... at least that is my best understanding.
The advantage for me of using DVD2SVCD over DVD2DVD-R is that the whole process right through Scenarist is fully automated (and also if need to, I can get subtitles into the final movie, though sometimes it can be a little tricky). I like to start the program before I go to bed and have it finished in the morning and the computer shut-down. However if Scenarist gets 'hung-up' then the computer is still running... and if I have to then manually clear/remove the offending tracks before Scenarist can finish processing, that negates the advantage of complete 'full automation'. Alas, I too now no longer believe that cutting-out portions of the movie (using DVDShrink) is the answer (sigh...) So I guess I'll just go back to using DVD2DVD-R followed by manually authoring in Scenarist... at least DVD2DVD-R will automatically shut-down the computer when its finished and overall it is faster.

I remembered that something asked where I had dvddecrypter located but it must have been D2SRoba. I confirmed it was being used by looking in the ini file, just could not remember how it got there. That's what happens when you get old :(

Your right, I mostly used the big 3. I switched to D2S cause I realized menus, extras, etc. mean nothing to me and I like the idea of popping in a disc and having the movie start right up. I've actually experimented a little more with this ripping thing and will post my results soon (I'm doing another run right now).

I've got the same error message for about 10 times now using the DVDDecrypter/DVD2SVCD/D2SRoBa/CCE/Scenarist combination. Some movies work fine, others produce the 'famous' error. In my case always around 33% or 34% and always with the same movies, no mater how many times I try those.
My system: MSI K7T Turbo, AMD 1900+, 1 GB Kingston PC133 SDRAM, 2 x 80GB Western Digital (8MB cache)
Here are all the info details my error produced.

I like your version better. It must have been raised to be mannerly. I get nothing - no error or status messages; just goes on strike. :)

I solved my problem by deleting the last chapter which was 1 or 2 seconds. You can check if you have a problem DVD at hand by checking the number of chapters on the cover/booklet and compare them with the chapters shown by ifoedit. The problem DVDs have an extra chapter of a couple of seconds. You can rip your DVD with DVDShrink without any compression. Use the Start/End option to copy it all without the last chapter. Once the files or on your PC, you can go on with DVD2SVCD like you always do. Good luck all!

I ran lots of tests and the ripping option is what fixed this problem for me. I tried Seabiscuit and the only way it would work is if I used D2S's internal ripping routines. Vstrip and DVDdecrypt both caused scenarist to fail @ 34%. And yes, I deleted all files before trying a new method. I took me a while but it produced results so I'm happy.

...or use DVDDecrypter to delete it..
To stop DVDDecrypter, from auto start ripping, in D2SRoba using tylo's DVDDecryptervstrip plugin,go to dvd2svcd\tylo\vstrip.ini file , change autostart=1 to autostart=0 and save it.Next time, DVDDecrypter will stop just before ripping. Delete the chapters you don't want and start ripping.
