Hi all,

The company where I work is planning to buy Scenarist (maybe PRO version).

I was wondering what we miss if we go to DVD studio Pro on a Mac hardware.

Does DVD StudioPro encodes better than the TARGA MPEG WORKS for Targa 3K? I'm ver well please with it but it does not do 2passVBR, only 1 pass (but very good).

One B I G diference is the price
- +/- $500 for DVD Studio Pro
- +/- $25000 for Scenarist PRO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do we profite with the diference??????????

Sincerely
Camafe

Don't buy DVD Studio Pro !!! If you wanna author commercial DVD titles. DVD Studio Pro has lots problems for commercial use.
Any Hollywood movie is not authored by DVD Studio Pro.
That's the reason why.

For examples about some problems.

DVD Studio Pro has CSS key mode as a option, but it never work on DVD9. even DVD5 maybe.

DSP can't do seamless play

DSP doesn't have real hilight mask control, as a result of that
Menu action is really slooooooooooooow.

DSP can't use same cells on a title, as a result of that, DSP always duplicates same cells.

When we started DVD Authoring company with DVD Studio Pro,
we had lots troubles with DSP. The latest DSP still has problems even now. Now scenarist is really fine.
I'll recommend you to buy good encoder with scenarist, Apples
MPEG 2 encoding engine is not proffesional quality.

Sorry about my poor English skill

btw, DVD SP 2.x is a completely different beast to 1.x.

basically 2.x can do everything that DVDMaestro could do, with a few more features.

as for DTS, im not exactly sure.

VooDoo7 made some really valid points, and I'd just like to address some of them, if I may:

1) True. This can be overcome, however, if you combine your use of DVD SP2 with Trai Forrester's TFDVDEdit utility (since we are discussing commercial programs anyway, I hope I will be forgiven for mentioning TFDVDEdit)

2) True, but then many would argue that neither can Scenarist! (not TRUE seamless-branching - see here for just one discussion on this issue: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62814&perpage=20&pagenumber=2 ). See my response to Point 1) for a solution.

3) I am given to understand that the slowness has much to do with all project menus being placed by DVD SP2 in the first VTS, which is not an efficient way of navigating a DVD disk. Again, see my response to Point 1) for a solution, though.

4) True. It does not place layer breaks correctly for DVD9s, for example. However, it IS possible to overcome this issue 100% successfully (see Trai's site for details on how to do this, mention of which is made in the March edition of Computer Video (although this has not been justly discussed, with reference to Trai, IMHO).

5) Yes, Scenarist is an excellent program, but it is nowhere NEAR as fast to author with as DVD SP2 is, and this is a point you should not underestimate in a production environment.

6) True. However, I would argue that you can get very acceptable quality with Canopus ProCoder or CCE (either SP or Basic), provided you configure them carefully. ProCoder really comes into it's own if you are encoding noisy DV material, since the Mastering Quality setting seems to cope with this rather well.

Scenarist is a superb system, and you should definitely consider it for professional authoring. Note that Scenarist is not perfect, either, though, and it's development is not being driven forward by Sonic at anything like the speed it should be (well, there's only just so much one programmer can do!) particularly considering the license cost. Therefore, I would strongly recommend that you speak to current PROFESSIONAL Scenarist users, since their day-to-day use of the program, and payment of the accompanying license fees, means their opinions would be very useful to you before you consider spending so much money.

Furthermore, CAMAFE, you specifically asked "Do we profit with the difference (in cost)???", and personally, I am not convinced that it is worth more than 30 times the cost of DVD SP2-plus-TFDVDEdit, so you should look very seriously into this second option before making your purchase decision.

I am interested to know what you finally decide, so please repost here once you have chosen a system, giving your reasons why. I am sure many forum members will be as interested as me.

Good luck!
