Hi all,
we've released a new DVX version, for those of you who don't know DVX aleady I'll give a short explanation in the form of Q&A:
what is DVX?
DVX is a rich featured and easy to use Gordian Knot like tool
why is it called DVX?
the main usage is *DVD/DVB* but it handles everything AviSynth, VirtualDubMod and BeSweet can handle
what do I need to use DVX?
in general a up to date system is recommend/required, .NET 1.1, Windows 2000/XP, DirectX 9, Win98 and DirextX 8 should work but without support by me
what is the .NET?
.NET are a couple of new technologies mainly about software development that make up a new programming model. .NET was created by Microsoft to overcome shortcomgs of existing technologies. It was designed from scratch taking the best concepts of existing programming models and introduces various new and innovative concepts like aspect oriented programming (attributes and reflection used all over the place in .NET). .NET is a universal programming model with only few weaknesses like it's not suited for time critical tasks because of .NET features like automatic memory management (these features make .NET significant easier to use like complex languages like C++). Indications about the importance of .NET in the future are the facts that new Microsoft API's will be .NET only which means they can only be programmed with .NET enabled languages, the native Win32 API will be only supported for backward compatibility of existing applications. C++ got .NET enabled and will be further improved. The core of .NET is standardized so the .NET technology can be adopted by other plattforms so binary compatibility between different plattforms is possible like with Java. Many leaders of the leading Linux Destop Gnome are pushing a free .NET implementation called Mono with great success to provide a clean and easy to use API for their plattform, (actually both project Gnome and Mono were started by the same guy which is very enthusiastic about Mono and the benefits of the .NET programming model).
how can the applications required for DVX be integrated?
there are three ways, manually in the settings dialog, using the incuded update plugin which downloads and installs everything automatically or by installing the DVX SysPack which bundles the most important software. Some additional programms like DVB demuxers are only available via update plugin and manual setup.
how stable is DVX?
it's relative stable, remaining problems can only be fixed with the help of user feedback
is DVX up to date?
yes, due to the generic design of the program new formats are usually supported within a week, sometimes at the same day
what does it cost?
it's freeware, GPL'ed VB .NET project, C# source code of some plugins is available as well
what is the purpose of the program?
to simplify the backup process as much as possible without limiting and takig away control of the controlled applications, almost all of their features can be reached somehow
were can I get it?
at the website there are download links, some outdated screenshots, support forum, plugins and help
