OK, i think i have to now say to myself... ' yes it has to be done by vobid '

Ive tryed to back this up without demuxing by vobid, by stripping the Italian and Russian 5.1 audio, and by stripping the menu so that its english only, so i could only re-encode the extras. But it just aint happening :( .. so im gonna have to re-encode the movie. Now i think this is seamless brenching as theres a thetrical and directors cut version on the disc.

Could i have some advice on doing this vobid thing before.

When demuxing by vobid, do i have both PGC's ticked

Heres the info from the ifo ..

"Note: demuxing by VOBID will always demux ALL PGCs in the VTS"

If you really want to avoid doing it you could always just keep one version and make PGCs 1 and 2 identical :)

Never done a seamless branching title but it's only 7 VOB IDs, so that doesn't look to bad. The bitrate allocation issue is annoying though...i.e. one of the (small) VOB IDs may deserve a higher average bitrate than what you are using.

Something you should REALLY use is DVD2AVIdg and mpegdec2dg.dll, because otherwise you will at the very least lose 3 frames of video at the end of each VOBID. This is not really an issue for complete movies but you don't want that frame loss when doing seamless branching. Unless I'm mistaken the current final version of DoItFast4U doesn't support this, so you'd need to do it manually if you don't have access to the 1.4.3 beta.

AFAIK you can't get seamless play using Scenarist when the VOBIDs are not consecutive, i.e. in title 1, when 2->4 and 5->7 you'll get a slight pause in playback (akin to a layer break, I'd imagine). You'll notice there is a "(IlVu)" in the IFOs for VOBIDs 2 and 5 in title 1. That tells you that you get seamless play in the original when a VOBID is skipped (e.g. 2->4). Of course, there could be a workaround in Scenarist, I don't know.

For consecutive VOBIDs you'll get seamless play, provided you enabled the seamless flag in the scenario editor of Scenarist.

Dont really wanna do this as one is thetrical and ones directors cut.

i only have one ilvu/seamless branch title. my t2 ultimate title (ive done it like 5 times because when i dont have any titles to do i do it for fun).. i didnt use dgdvd2avi last time but i agree , your better off using it (sync was fine and i never noticed a single problem)

if you follow oxps guide for seamless branching you will be fine..

I take it you mean this guide .. http://www.doom9.org/mpg/Seamless_Branching.htm .

Also this guide does'nt go as if you've used dif4u to demux, but does dif4u still work out your avg. bitrate if it demuxs by vobid ??

Also when it comes to encoding i need to tick these in cce right ... Restrict Auto I frame insertion and Close all GOPs, or is it only multiangles i tick this for ?

Trahald

yes.. doitfast calculates it fine with vobid.. im currently in negotiations with OxP for him to update that guide for using doitfast4u ;).. but anyway if youve done any projects with doitfast , its easy to incorporate his guide into your seamlessbranch project.

you dont have to worry about restricted i frame , just use what batchcce/docce defaults because ilvu wont be used. ive never noticed any pauses in playback

OK thanks, after ive finished backing up ' Returner ' , i'll have a bash at Identity.

Oh in CCE, what about close all gops, as i normally have this untick like the cce guides says to.I know you should have close all gops ticked when doing a multi angle project, but does that not apply to seamless branching ??

Matthew
23rd January 2004, 22:12
I don't see how that would apply to seamless branching. It applies to multiangle because each angle should have the same GOP structure and you want to be able to switch between the angles at any time. But here all you are doing is formulating a playlist of sorts consisting of different cells.

Incidentally, OxP's guide doesn't seem to mention that Scenarist doesn't properly support seamless branching ;)

correct. interleaved blocks from seamless branching do not require structrures to be the same nor the gops closed

any ideas how to create the interleaved blocks?

Ask Warner Brothers if you can use their proprietary authoring system? :p

TFDVDEdit for Mac apparently supports seamless branching

What are Interleaved Blocks any ways ??

are they what (IlVu) is in the ifo ?

Matthew
25th January 2004, 04:06
Well I have little idea about the technical details - that link I posted explains it a bit though - but yes that's what that bit in the IFO denotes. See how IlVu appears only for the 2 sets of alternative VOBIDs (2/3 and 5/6).

Alanoll

Ilvu is Interleaved VOB Unit.

Is Basically an Angle, but spans PGCS instead of chapters and the durations of their content don't have to be exactly the same.

But i haven't seen any software that supports them yet, except for that mac link.
