Hi
I have an external Sony DRU510-UL. (It burns at 4x) Recently sony released another burner DRU-530, which can burn at 8x.
I was wondering if (in theory) it is possible to increase burn speed just by upgrading the firmware.
Also, what are the odds of destroying my burner if I upgraded its firmware with DRU-530 firmware ?
Is there any technical document that can compare the difference between this two models ?
Thanks

I think in some cases it is possible. Sony released an upgrade for my burner which allowed me to burn DVD+R/RW at 4x, up from 2x. I believe it would depend on the capabilities of the burner itself. I would look for technical differences...
You could always try it and let us know how it goes.

That's right, you can always try but always there is a chance of losing your $400 burner ? ;)

Uhm yeah do NOT try this unless you have heard from a reliable source that it will actually work!!
It is definitely possible for a firmware update to speed up SOME drives, but it all depends on what drive it is, and whether or not it was artificially limited to the speed it currently supports.
As for what constitutes a reliable source, well the Sony website is one...and if I were you, perhaps several posts from veteran users on this board might also be enough to make me try it.

I wouldn't expext Sony to put some information on their website saying that you can upgrade your drive to an 8x one for free, because then who would buy their new DRU530 burner ? :p
Well, it is just a feeling that I have about this drive that it can do it, it is a solid drive that can burn virtually anything you throw at it,
I even burned a DVD-R 1x media with this drive at full 4x speed. :)
Thanks for the posts
