just thought I bring up a link I came across on another forum, NTSC Video (http://nfg.2y.net/games/ntsc/visual.shtm) I wonder if any codec uses something like this?

Been there, done that :D. Reducing blue alone creates a 1/3rd compression gain, however reducing U and V in YUV creates a 2/3rd compression gain and is less noticable :D. Also, wavelet smoothing and then compressing the H and S planes in HSL is even less noticable, because you're not subsampling at all. The trick there is that everything except the edges you can basically throw away in the H and S planes. Now that's a space saver :).
