Hi ants47,
I have generated many anamorphic (720x576) 2pass DivX encodes at around 120mins. All of which have a file size of either 700MB or 800MB.
Using this methodology you could in theory store 6No 120min movies onto a single DVD~R/RW!
That said, I watch my encodes on a TV, so I don't require the quality that some forum members like to encode to.
So it is possible. What tools/methods are you using/tried?
Cheers

The Doom9 website is full of suggestions, so the final choice (or choices) is entirely up to you.
In time you will discover tools that will suit your requirements, so it would be unfair for me to sway your preference. That said to get anything like the quality you want you will need to generate 2pass encodes!

@SeeMoreDigital: huh? He wants to go avi->DVD-Video ;)
ants47, using TMPGEnc you can make the output file size whatever you like (within reason, obviously), you just have to fiddle with the average bitrate. Sounds like you are using 1 pass VBR and letting TMPGEnc decide what the output size should be.
3 films on a DVD-R isn't a great idea IMO, but 2 is doable.

6 hours is a lot ! What you could do is try to encode it to CVD standard and bring
the audio back to 128 kbit/s or lower. Still would give you a bitrate of 1600 and
2000 is more like it. Also you have to do several passes VBR.

In that case, has anybody here tried the DVD tools/matrices that are available from the KVCD.net website?

I put all the rambos on one disc. They quality was pretty good. I also used dvd2svcd and did 4 pass mode with CCE for a comparison. D2S was the better quality. I think they are under 6 hours combined but I still had some room left on dvd-r. So, in conclusion, I would use DVD2SVCD as it is easier to work with. when done encoding you must use a seperate authoring program or dvd2one to join them.

You could encode as you presently are in tmpgenc and then use ReJig to reduce the video size.

Personally I wouldn't go for transcoding ~40%, if you would like some
quality left, use a encoder like CCE(2.5).
a simple AVS script like:
AviSource("cap1.avi","cap2.avi","cap3.avi")
BicubicResize(352,576) #for Pal
And drop it on CCE, (I like CCE)
then set Mulitpass VBR ~4 Times?
Bitrate avg 1600 min 0 max 9000
The rest depends on the source: PAL / NTSC, fps, size, DAR
progressive / interlaced.
In the end you have a m2v file compatible for dvd but still have use a
authoring program to make the dvd.
Not sure audio will work with CCE (mp2 128 kbit/s ?)
For other versions of CCE you could use other matrices
maybe move this thread to the encoding section ?
