I had been running windows 2000 for a few years now, and running mpc on it never having any troubles. This past weekend I finally did a nice format and installed windows xp on my system. You wouldn't believe the troubles I was having just getting MPC to play files back now! Whenever I would try to play an avi file that used divx or xvid, media player would just freeze. I have finally worked out what was causing the problems and have gotten everything working (I think). Please note that I tried other players and they played files fine, only MPC was freezing. Also note that these problems did not effect me when I was running win2k, only now since I have installed winxp.

First of all, I found an option in divx 5 that was causing mpc to freeze. The "Yuy extended mode". This option was enabled by default.
Next, I installed ffdshow and noticed that it too was having the same problem. I got it working by unchecking the "YV12" box.

Hopefully this information will help gabest to fix problems if they exist, or at least help someone else who might run into this same trouble.

Update: I just noticed that I am still having trouble playing avi's encoded with wmv9, and also mpegs. I tried setting ffdshow to handle mpegs but it didn't help. :(

I have solved the problem. It seems that it was a problem with the video drivers that xp installed. I have an old Geforce 2 and xp recognized it fine, so I didn't bother downloading drivers from nvidia. What is funny is the ones that I downloaded are supposedly "uncertified" compared to the non-working drivers that xp installed.

As I posted in the main mpc thread, I had a problem playing videos using mpc and other players on my geforce4 - every now and then a video would not play and I would get a page fault and win98 would freeze completely, forcing me to reboot every time.

I removed the driver (remembering to change to a lower resolution first) and then wiped out every trace of it using Driver Cleaner.

I then reinstalled it (had to re-install the original oleaut32.dll however or the installer wouldn't run) (the latest detonator drivers) successfully.

So far it is working without having crashed, it's already 2 days without a crash. So perhaps the driver got corrupted somehow or there was some trace of an earlier version, who knows.

Hence I suggest wiping out earlier versions of graphics drivers ( if you had any ) using a utility like Driver Cleaner, before you reinstall the drivers.

I had the problems again after a few days.

Then I tried uninstalling IE5 with the IEeradicator - that solved the problem of windows accessing the floppy drive sporadically, but it still crashed occasionally when playing video files.

So I reinstalled win98 on top of itself, last weekend. Seems ok - it hasn't crashed since last Saturday.
