interlaced encoding?

I have some footage in 740*480 interlaced avi files captured by a capture card from a Hi8 camcorder. I want to preserve the maximum quality in 40-min per CD. I can either

1. deinterlaced and encoding in progressive or
2. encoding in interlaced mode.


Which one is better? I know interlace mode in DivX 5.0 is very buggy and the bitrate is highly unpredictable. How about Xvid's interlaced mode?

Depends on whether you want to watch it on your TV only or also on PC. If you only want to watch in TV then keep it interlaced if not then deinterlace it properly and never have to worry about it again :)

From what I can tell is that the interlaced mode is working correctly in the latest betas though I still recommend running a few short tests with lots of motion / scenes where it shows up enough.

Actually I just want to preserve as sumch information as possible for future editing or watching. I do not think I will have a MPEG4 player recently. So can I just go ahead and deinterlace it? And could you recommend a deinterlace filter for me. Thank you.

Stuff that I have been deinterlacing mostly was stuff I shot with Hi8 / DV (PAL). I've been using TomsMoComp deinterlacer (Avisynth) mostly and I cant complain about the quality :)
To see what works best for you you should test it out before doing all your encodes with it.
