hey all...wasn't sure where to stick this one...but i just got a new computer and i'm on xp. i have had dvds load on this a couple times...but now it wont load them at all. i can't figure out why, as i haven't really installed anything differently...but this has happened on 2k with some dvds and when i tried them on 98se they worked...but i can't go back to 98se now. who would want to. anyways does anyone know why this is happening or how to fix it? it's like it can't read the dvd

i have had a similar effect. sometimes the drive would only spin and click every few seconds but the dvd wouldn't play. Check and make sure that the drive is in udma mode...when xp receives 12 (i believe) error messages from the drive it automatically switches it to pio mode which is not optimal for viewing dvd's. Right click "my computer" and click "manage" and check the advanced settings of your ide controller and you will see the mode the dvd player is running in.
you can change it there but sometimes they are stubborn and will only set udma mode when you deinstall the ide controller and reboot...it will be reinstalled automatically after the reboot and will most likely require another restart after that. I don't recommend this procedure (deinstallation) if the dvd is on the primary ide controller though...only on the secondary. I had a sony drive for a while and i had to do this like 4 times a year : (

thanks for u'r help...i'll try moving it to the secondary and reinstall my ide controller
i upgraded the firmware to the newest even though it already was. also i didn't realize that none of the dvds were reading in the drive, and when the computer is booting it says udma mode 44 ...i've never heard of that
