I have searched the forums but not found an answer to my question.When editing tv films with dvd shrink,i can take out the ads.etc.at the beginning and end but how do i take out the middle 3 0r 4 breaks for adverts.

Hi. I am fairly new at this too, so forgive me if my advice doesn't help you...If the file extension is avi, I think what you have to do is reauthor the file into five (depends how many commercials) separate files. You can do this with VirtualDubMod. Then, once you have the segmented avi files, use VirtualDubMod to merge them all together. Now, you should have one long commercial-free avi file.
Then you have to switch the avi file to an mpeg file. You do this with--actually I'm stuck on this part...hopefully someone else will post--Once you have an mpeg file, use TMPGnc DVD Author to switch the MPEG file to DVD files (VOB ISO) Then you should be able to burn with TMPGenc DVD Author.

I know this sounds convoluted, and maybe there's a simpler way...
Any advice from anyone else out there?

You could use vdub to save various parts and join them back together. You coule encode the whole thing to mpg or if already mpg use tmpgDvdAuthor and cut out as many spots as you like as you covert to vobs

If you're using DVDShrink, you can set multiple start/end points for a title. You just have to drag the original title to the re-author section multiple times. So, for example, you drag the title over the first time, and set the start just after the intro commercials and set the end to just before the first commercial break. Then you drag the title over again, and set the start for that one just after the end of the first commercial break, and the end to just before the second commercial break. And so on...

Note that each start/end will result in a separate title on the output DVD from Shrink. On playback, you may notice a short pause as the player moves from one title to the next. I don't know if that bothers you or not - it wouldn't bother me; a pause where there used to be a commercial break seems perfectly appropriate.


PS. If you were/are using virtualDub, removing commercials is excessively easy. For each commercial break, just set edit start and edit end to the start and end of the break, and hit the delete key. Once you've deleted all the commercial breaks, you can do direct stream copy and save the whole thing to a new AVI in one go. I'm not sure if this will work with every kind of AVI though; it might only work with codecs where every frame is an I frame, like mjpeg or huffyYUV.

Hi Kedirekin. Can you tell us or point us in the right direction of how to switch the avi file to mpeg format?
Also. I'm confused--I thought DVD Shrink would only load IFO files, and that the thread starter was wanting to convert avi to DVD.
If so, how was that person editing them in DVD Shrink:confused:

Unfortunately you can't use DVDShrink to convert AVI files. And yes, to confirm your statement, DVDShrink needs IFO files to work.

Reading the original post, I got the impression that bronkone7 was attempting to remove commercials from TV shows recorded on a DVD recorder. It sounded like he wanted to use DVDShrink to do it, so I did my best to point out how.

Converting an AVI to MPG format is deceptively simple - you just need an MPG encoder. CCE and TMPGEnc are popular and have inexpensive version. TMPGEnc even has a free trial period. The tricky part is setting things up so the encoder makes a DVD compliant MPG. It'd probably take time to learn how to convert the audio too. Then you need an authoring program to take those things and make a DVD out of it. From the posts I've seen, TMPG DVD Author and DVDLab are both popular and well thought of.

Anyone know of a tool that automates it? I haven't used it in a while, but if I'm not mistaken, DVD2SVCD has an option to use an AVI as the source. I've also heard it can do DVD2DVD now too. Perhaps it will let you do AVI-to-DVD. You might want to check it out.

Thanks Kedirekin. I'll check out some of those tools. Actually, after looking at them, TMPGEnc seems like it would be the easiest.
I guess you could use that in conjunction with VDub to make a collection of mpegs--like music videos. Thanks for the advice!:)
