Does anybody know what the max Mpeg2 image pixel frame size a vob container can theoretically store?
I'm thinking about future High-Definition formats!

It depends on the Profile / Level. (For instance, the maximum of MP@ML is 720 x 576.) But because of the way the bits are stored, I believe the absolute maximum limit is 16383 x 16383.

Possibly a 2 part question? MPEG-2, as fcchandler said, can accomodate up to 16383x16383. But the standard also defines levels, so far the highest level (HL) is 1920x1152 (and 60 fps).
But you threw in "vob container", that means according to DVD specs. The current DVD is constrained to MP@ML or SP@ML. ML = Main Level, 720x576 (30 fps). You can expect the HD-DVD will be either H-14 (1440x1152) or HL.

DVB just like DVD uses a specific subset of the MPEG-2 standard. 1080 lines is being used for NTSC, but the standard allows up to 1152 (which is double the Main Level, which is 576 to accomodate PAL).

Look for the file called "second part of the above" (it's really not the second part, but MPEG-2). Unrar it and look at ls138182.doc, Annex E (Profile and level restrictions)

Thanks for the replies guys.
As you may have guessed I'm thinking about future applications for the Mpeg2/vob container. The main on being the proposed storage of Hi-Def Mpeg2 streams utilizing either 1280x720p or 1920x1080i.
However, at present there are no Mpeg decoder chipsets that can decode/handle more that 720x576 (total 414,720) encoded pixels. And there are no DVD authoring applications that can HD frame sizes either. So I guess it's all a pipe dream!
Anyway I've now learned more than I knew.
I wonder what spec container BluRay will use..... probably not vob?
