How do I combine short clips?

I read your post before it was edited and didn't see a rule violation, but I didn't respond at that time, as there are several members that frequent Noobs on a daily basis that are much more proficient and knowledgeable on the topic you spoke of. IIRC, you wanted to cut either scenes, chapters, or VOB's from several different DVD's, then append them, making what I believe you referred to as "something like a movie trailer". Boow may have interpreted your request as having a commercial intent, as in creating a product for public release. This would be an easy conclusion to draw, that's one of the reasons it's so important to be as concise as possible when detailing a problem. If this were the case, it would certainly violate rules both within and without the forum, but, as I've stated, I didn't interpret your request in that fashion.

Well, My original question was.....Is there a way to take small clip (say 2 to 3 seconds each) off of a dvd (say Star Trek) and string em together?....then play em back or no?

use dvdshrink in re-author mode.

From the browser to your right select the source dvd and then select the title u want and transfer it to the window to your left.

After that u may define in and out points and decide what streams to keep.

Repeat for all your sources and hit the backup button.

That's all.

After doing it for the first time it feels and is very easy.

The DVDShrink program that was suggested is as close as I have come but not quite what I would like.

Here is basically what I am wanting to do, and really this is just for fun. Basically I wish to creat a "promo", like a 60 second video with several differnt clips (a few seconds each) off of a dvd, then string em together, and play em back with a completly different soundtrack. (say a bunch o Trek clips but with the theme song playing rather than dialog). And I wish to play this back totally independent of the DVD (say, saved on the HDD and played with windows media player or quicktime or whatever.)

So is there a way to do this or should I be giving up?

use avisynth.... that is if you're looking for a xvid.... if you know how to get the vob>dvd2avi>avisynth then you can use the clip(#, #) command and then string them together.... i'll give more details if you need them... but is that what you're lookin for ?

Wow.....what you just said is basically an alien language to me. I have never really tried any of this before so I have no clue whats what. I have seen the IFO, BUP, and VOB files but have NO CLUE what they mean, whay there are so many, what to do with em, or anything.

I am basically starting from the bottom here I guess.

dvd shrink can glue the segments toghether and will save u the hassle of using avisynth or a non linear Editor like Premiere.

When r done with this, u have to demux the new files to audio/video, replace the audio and remux them together. But I guess, u r a few miles away from this, at the moment.

Take a look at dvd structure (http://www.doom9.org/dvd-structure.htm), will take care the 'what r these files' question, the dvd basics (http://www.doom9.org/dvd-basics.htm) as well as the dvd glossary (http://www.doom9.org/glossary.htm).

These will get you a lot down the road. When u feel confident enough u may revive this thread and we will be glad to assist you. Basicaly what u r missing now is the demux and remux point of the procedure.

U can demux the resulting vobs with vobedit and re-author with ifoedit guide (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/ifoedit-dvdauthor.htm).
