TomsMoComp the best?

I'm curious to hear some different opinions on this one. I get great results with TomsMoComp but I am wondering if it is the best to use when file size is of great importance? I'm not looking to take a huge cut in detail, but I have noticed that when i use TomsMoComp (even at high bitrates), I get high 'Frame mean quant' where other folks do not.

My opinion is that there is no 'best'.

It always depends on the source itself. It will make a difference whether you have a good quality source or something less good...
You have to test, essentially.

the source is good quality but very fast motion (like boxing) and im trying to keep the number of CDs at a min. while not looking to give up all my detail.

hmmm. boxing tends to be shot with a fairly fast shutter (to make it more exciting to watch maybe) so any deinterlacer that keeps 1 field is going to make it hard to compress. motion search algos work MUCH better when there's a nice amount of motion blurring.

but that's not to say blend deinterlacing will be better... it'll look like puke and probably be worse. i think you'll just need a clever encoder.

you could use a spatio-temporal smoother to make things nicer. it'll temporal smooth the static bits and spatial smooth the moving bits. that will help out the encoder side because a smoother picture = less high frequencies (that are hard to see in high motion) = more bits for the important parts.
