I've been playin around with the settings with this new one and wondered if anyone had any tips/preferences other then the defaults they'd like to share (with keeping file size at smallest possible and still preserving the most quality)?

Anyone find it beneficial to use 'Profile @ Level'?

Just curious.
Thanks,

Well I always turn on adaptive quant, quarterpel, trellis & chroma optimizer - leave everything else default.

Increasing max B-Frames to 3 can yield good results if you keep the B-VOP sensitivity low (max 10, usually leave it at 0) and if you use a "low quality" matrix like H263 or HVS-Good (they're quite effective at keeping mosqito noise down to a minimum, though you do obviously lose a small amount of detail).

Never used 'Profile @ Level' so can't comment.

The above seem to work great for my 1-CD rips but these are just my personal thoughts........

I managed to get some great results with xvid beta3 on a 1h 50min movie. It's the old french nikita movie with some major noise and shadowing issues. I still managed to get it to 700megs maintaining a very good quality.

Settings I used:
MPEG-quant (H.263 looks horridly blurred so I wouldn't use it)
Quarterpel (returns some of the sharpness and transforms some artefacts into something that looks like noise)
B-frames (quant ratio of 1.7 which is about maximum comp. without making moving lips into blocks)
adaptive quant OFF (just makes the encode look worse on old TFTs and TV)
GMC OFF (if I remember correctly, the xvid 05-2003 builds crash when this is set on)

Motion max
VHQ mode 1 (mode 4 makes the skin on the faces a bit floaty. nope, it isn't perfect, especially on noisy sources.)
Chroma motion OFF (on low bitrate movies it makes the noise float and generally makes the image look artificial. I probably wouldn't enable this for any analogue sources eg. for most movies before y.2000 and lq sources. Good for Anime and CGI.)
Trellis OFF (I can't really see any reason to use this. Should increase psnr and decrease size. Effects are negligible, it's slow and might kill important detail.)
Chroma opt. OFF (If blocky colours give you a problem, convert the colourspace to RGB before encoding. No need to optimize anything.)

Also a 20% increase to I-frames is a good idea since by default they are undersized. Also a 20-30% extra compression to high bitrate scenes wouldn't hurt.

A ffdshow grab with swscaler sharpness set to full and a slight touch with nic's deblocking + loads of other adjustments.
