I've just given etna's firmware ago try, flashed the drive, and +r media is working fine, gonna try -r media later, does anyone have any recommendations on which brand of -r media is good for this unit?
just tried datawrite dvd-r's (registers as princo's?) and they work perfectly on my desktops and ps2's dvd drive

I am using NEC1300a f/w 1.8 , i use Ritek G04's for x4 burns, Ritek G03's x2 burns. Superb dvd-r , no coasters, great compatibilty.
Datawrite yellows (princo) and Datawrite Red (infosmart) are cheaper, but not by much, but if they work in your player thats all u need.:)
I prefer to burn the yellows at x2 rather than the rated x4. There compatibilty with players decreases significantly when burned at x4, as does there quality of play back, and instability in last quarter of disc.
P.S. haven't tried datawrite red in the 1300a yet, i think f/w 1.9 is needed for effective burning in nec1300a.

i've tried both 1.08v2e1 and the 1.0a1 firmware on the yellow datawrite dvd-r's and only 1 in 10 actually worked (so far), burnt them at 2x. although +r burning has improved with the firmware(s).
alexnoe: i havent really used these hacked firmware(s) up until 2days ;) so no. i did a bit of an error check and speed test, with dvdinfopro, on the one dvd-r that was okay, no errors on the disk, but the quality of the burn was terrible.
i shall have to give some tdk dvd-r's a go, they seem to have a higher "hit rate" compared to these datawrite/princo's
