Cctv Pc

Hi,

I was wondering whether anyone has either looked into or currently uses a PC as a small CCTV system (1 camera).

I was thinking about using a PC, camera (perhaps a webcam) and a PIR sensor to watch the cars on our drive as one of them was broken into last night:mad:.

Also has anyone seen any software software to do this.

What you want is surveillance software, with motion detection on the video itself (no need for another sensor). There is plenty of it, some for free. I can't remember where I got several of these programs years ago, or even there names (no longer use them) but it had to be a popular legal site like download.com or tucows. I currently use Cyber Eyes (came with the 4 camera capture card)

After I posted I did come across Cyber Eyes and am thinking about it but not sure.

Im thinking of using a "Via Epia-M 10000 Nemehiah" as it is small and I should be able to passivly cool it, but I am not sure whether this will be powerful enough to capture a webcam at 640x480@30fps or an analog source to preferably XVID or else MPEG2.

Just use the motion jpeg codec and you should be fine.

Thanks for that I will look into that codec, did not realise that motion JPEG was not very CPU intensive.

Do you have a Via Epia-M, are they OK?

No but I used to nave a celeron 300 running at 450 and it didn't mind motion jpeg at all.
