View Full Version : Will a DVD+R hold 4,700,084,224?

I've done this backup and the size of the vobs/ifos is 4,700,084,224.

I know this is fine for DVD-R but can anyone confirm that this will fit on a DVD+R? The FAQ just says that DVD+R holds "about 4,700,000,000 bytes".

I'm just being precautionary in case in future I want to make a copy onto a DVD+R single layered disc.

Thanks :)

My Verbatim 4x DVD+R say 4,700,372,992 bytes, but it may vary a bit from one manufacturer to another. I only have Verbatim +R, so I can't check that.

Thanks for the reply.

I plugged that number into google and over 2 pages of results were returned so it seems credible.

However, it would seem to apply to image size not VOB/IFO size? Because the image is actually 4,700,973,056 *sigh*

Here is what DVD-R is:

4.383 GB
4,489 MB
4,706,074,624 bytes

Can someone fill in the rest for DVD+R and confirm the bytes. Thanks.

?? GB
4,483 MB
4,700,372,992 bytes

From mrbass's sticky in One click DVD backup solutions Overview: (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=58950)

Misc
Blank DVD-R 4,489MB 4,706,074,624 bytes or 4.383GB
Blank DVD+R 4,483MB 4,700,372,992 bytes or 4.377GB

DVD Read/Burn Speeds
1X = 1,385KB/s burn time ~ 60mins
2X = 2,770KB/s burn time ~ 30mins
2.4X= 3,324KB/s burn time ~ 22mins
4X = 5,540KB/s burn time ~ 15mins
8X = 11,080KB/s burn time ~ 9mins

4X (5,540KB) DVD speed = 36X (5,400KB) CD speed

This is funny. DVDDecrypter reports for
Verbatim DVD-R 4x: 4,706,074,624 (2,297,888 sectors).

But when I start burning, and the size is below 4,707,319,808 (2298496 sectors), DVD Decryper warns that the disc may be too small, I press 'ignore' and the drive starts burning....the very same happens with Maxell 2x and Taiyo Yuden 4x. I have recorded one with 2,298,233 sectos:

This is a recorded Taiyo Yuden, where the size originally also was reported as 2,297,888 sectors:

It works with all discs. I wrote a similar size to a Verbatim...I don't know if it is 'overburn': It takes the physical size as capacity, instead of the number of free blocks.

this is why plextor are the #1 drive available...
