Dropping frames

I have used Pinnacle S-8 in past and it captured good. Now when I try to capture the timer counter on view screen in Pinnacle will stop, DV camcorder keeps running and when counter on Pinnacle view screen starts again It drops lots of frames. Then all runs ok until counter hangs again and the dropping of lots of frames repeats. I have un-installed and run registery cleaner and re installed, with no improvement. I have installed Ulead movie factory 2 since my previous captures,also a DVD burner. Could these interfere with Pinnacle capture? Thanks Foz

You've not had any response for several days, so I'll try to help you with a wild stab at a possible answer.

If two devices with different performance characteristics are on the same IDE bus, the bus will operate at the speed of the slower device.

This means that if you added your DVD burner to same IDE bus as the hard drive you are trying to use for capture, then this could be why you are seeing performance problems.

jggimi, I have made some progress, found my new 2nd Hard drive had changed to PIO mode changed it back to UDMA mode 5. This corrected my playback, but both HD's are too slow to capture video, according to speed test I have done at PcPitStop and others. As for the set up, I installed the new 2nd HD on primary IDE with master HD. Master is 7200 RPM 2MB cache, and new slave is 7200 RPM 8MB cache.On the secondary IDE I have a LG CD/RW as master using UDMA mode 2, and a NEC 1300A DVD as slave using UDMA 2.Found this link describing why 2nd hard drive changed to PIO mode:

When this changed something else must have changed also, because when I first installed 2nd HD all worked good for a while. Thanks Foz

Finally got my frame dropping cured. I had 359 files in my IE
favorites, I copied this favorite folder to 2nd HDD, and deleted the
favorites in IE down to 63 files. I captured two 30 minute DV tapes without
dropping a frame. Thanks to all. Foz

Yes I know this is an old post, but I've just been reading up on capturing and I saw this post and I figured I would point something out.

The theory above doesn't apply to modern hardware using UDMA. So if you put your brand new ATA-133 drive on the same cable as your DVD drive it will indeed run at its maximum speed. Ie it will not be stuck at ATA-33 speeds just because a DVD drive is attached to it. As long as both drives are running properly in UDMA mode and he isn't using the DVD drive at the same time as the hard drive it shouldn't be a problem. Putting the optical drive seperate from the hard drive is still good advice, but not because it causes the faster drive to run at the same exact speed of the slower device.:)
