Need help playing DVD movies on my PC

I have a fairly new computer but am having trouble playing DVD movies. (Intel D850EMV2 motherboard, PentiumIV 2GHz, 256 MB RAM, Radeon 9200 AGP 128MB video card, Sony DDU1621 DVD-ROM, Win98SE, Direct X9, WinDVD 5 & Interactual Player installed)

When I put a recent release DVD in my DVD player the DVD drive revs up, the hard drive activity light brightens up and my computer becomes frozen. I usually have to kill the power to get out of this frozen state, because the computer is too busy to acknowledge <Cntrl><Alt><Del>. The strange thing is that if I insert older vintage DVD movies they play just fine.

Anyone have any clue as to what is going on here? I'd appreciate any help I can get.

you need some software to play dvd's. Windows does not play dvd's natively.

Most drives come with PowerDVD, or something like that.

There is lots of players out there like WinDVD, etc.

Grab one and play away.

Sorry if I wasn't clear but I have WinDVD 5 & Interactual Player installed. They play older DVD movies fine, just not the new release DVD's.

Weird... Try using another player, one not directshow related like VLC (http://www.videolan.org/), to see what happens. Maybe your DVD drive is no good anymore... :(

hello,

your DVD player may require a firmware update inorder to read newer disks, check the manufacturer to see if one is available.
