Interesting. It looks like MS are starting to push their HD stuff more now. They've launched a site dedicated to it now: http://www.wmvhd.com/

Hopefully we'll see more stuff available in this format (to keep us going until AOD/BluRay comes along). Also, apparently the Coral Reef Adventure DVD doesn't require an internet connection like the t2 Extreme one for playback...looks like they took note of the protests about it.

I have another explanation: it isn't a hollywood production. I'd expect any hollywood movie to be DRM'd up the a** and I think you'd do good not to buy into this even though it might be tempting. My parents thaught me that if you give the devil your little finger, he takes your whole hand.
Whether the movie industry, DRM or Microsoft is the devil I leave up to you.

What really upsets me is that i OWN T2 extreme edition and i can not transcode it because of DRM ....

but even WORSE is that backing up T2 extreme edition is not allowed to be a dicusion here ?!

i know that DRM crowd would like 2 shut this site up but i am not talking about piracy but just a simple FU (fair use) :angry:

Cracking DRM of streaming videos is a nono as long as the source is not positively something that you have a right to make backup copies from, but that's about it. I see nothing wrong with making a copy of the disc you are talking about as long as you do not break copyright law (so the disc has to be yours).

Thank You for CLEAR answer ... the day i got a beautiful metal case T2 Extreme edition i wanted to start a thread about backup of that dvd (HDTV PART) but i did not wanna get in the trouble :cool:

I downloaded those HDTV samples (about one megabyte per second), set my video for full HDTV resolution. And, my 2GHz AMD played them smoothly (good job, MS). However, using Windows Media Player, I could only get a 4:3 aspect ratio on the videos (boo hiss, MS).

How do we back up our T3 WMV DVD?

I was under impression that WMV copy protection hasn't been broken yet. The old one I think has but not the one WMV9 uses. So I'd say you can't. Unless you want to create an image of DVD on your HDD and mount it.

Does copy protection prevent a user from capturing the video with a capture card? I don't know much about the subject, but couldn't you just capture the T2 DVD in uncompressed form and re-encode with whatever codec you want?

I think that's theoretically possible, but you would need a few Tbytes storage space for that.

You will need for that some real high-level capture card. what costs ... And quality will be in any case much lower than capturing video memory in some way.

If you're into HD encodes, then you may have noticed that some of the encodes on the M$ web site are 1080p!

This is a quantum leap in quality compared to current 1080i broadcasts and far higher quality than the 720p broadcasts some of you may be enjoying now!

If some of you are having playing 1080p please be aware that you need a fast PC and a graphics card with plenty of memory!

720p should be a whole lot easier!

The Terminator HDTV WMV forces you to use WMP. How DRM could possibly be any real copy protection. If you copy an encrypted disk, you would have an encrypted copy that works just as well.

A disk would still have to have something that could not be copied to be copy protection. The DRM (the encryption) would just prevent you from easily manipulating the video without analogue capture.

Speaking of analogue capture, while it is very easy for anyone to hook up a video capture card, it should be easy for a programmer to create a program to capture the decoded video from the video buffer without any analogue degredation, in which case the only loss of quality would be the recompression. Better yet, a programmer should be able to figure out how to capture the video stream after it is decrypted but before it is uncompressed (ala iToons).

However, have any of you guys 'Living in the US or Canada' tried to see if it's possible to open/play the disc using the WindowsMedia 9 Encoder?

Im downloading the 1080p T2... :)

With one of this good old 56k modems... :(

I have already 45MB down so far... :)

It's an exe file because it's stored in an (old fashioned executable) zip format!
