Line out to tv and Resolution??

Do I need to encode movies any higher than 400+ lines of resolution since tv's only show 400??? Basically, am I overkilling my encodes which I want to watch on my tv when encoding at rates such as 640x352 or higher?

A dvd is 720x576. A vcd is 356x288. You can certainly tell the difference. Higher res is better, tho on a smallish Tv you may not notice the difference between 640 and 720.

But if a Non HDTV only displays a certain amount of lines say 480...then how does it display the extra 160 lines to display at 640? Will it even display 640 if that's what the movie is encoded at?

Are you living in an NTSC or PAL TV signal country?

In the main, PAL (CRT) TV's and their signals occupy 625 vertical lines. And PAL DVD video streams contain 576 vertical pixels.

NTSC (CRT) TV's and their signals occupy 525 vertical lines. And NTSC DVD video streams contain 480 vertical pixels.

I dont think you can directly say 1 line on dvd equal 1 line on Tv. Its more to do with amounts of detail, pyschovisual perception.:confused:

There are all sorts of technical reasons why 1No analog video line does not accurately equal 1No digital video line of pixels!

However, things will become a lot easier to understand, if/when the displays we use to watch are encodes become fully digital too. As at present whenever we sit down to watch our favourite digital encode, the output signal has to be converted to analog before we can view it on our TV or PC monitor!

That is unless you have a video card with a DV-I output and a monitor with a DV-I input. In which case the video signal should be digital all the way. Meaning 1No encoded video pixel can also equal 1No digital monitor display pixel!

Also think of the future, when you have hi-def TV .. watching your old encodes at 400x200 will be like watching the keystone kops.
