IFO/VOB edit subtitle question

is it possible to extract a subtitle stream, edit it (for example spelling, grammer etc), then add it back to the IFO/VOB?

Not directly, but you can do something similar.
Example for main movie:

- Use subrip to extract the subtitles as text (*.srt).
- Now you can edit the subtitles, change Framerate etc.
- demux the vobs (dvd2avi, vstrip, dvd decrypter, smartripper)
- Use srt2sup to create a *.sup file with your changed sutitles
- use ifoedit to save your chapters out of the pgc
- Use ifoedit to author the new dvd

If this DVD is NTSC, use IC7 to burn it from harddisk, because ifoedit seems to be a little bit buggy. IC7 parses the vobs and repairs the 'mistakes'.

just a few more questions...

1. will it keep the original subtitle format (colour, font size etc), or default it to white text?

2. the two ifo edit suggestions I don't quite understand (still learning the program).

srt2sup won't create any color.
The colors are set in the corresponding *.ifo.
You can set the colors in preferences, the srt2sup shows you what you have to enter in the ifo manually. But it should be easy to change the colors back to original:

Use ifoedit to open the original ifo.

select VTS_0X_X.ifo->VTS_PGCITI->VTS_PGC_X where X is your PGC (in most cases the first one)

Hit menu "subtitle color"->"copy colors from this pgc"
Now open the ifo of your authored DVD on the HD, select in this ifo again VTS_0X_X.ifo->VTS_PGCITI->VTS_PGC_X and hit menu "subtitle color"->"paste colors ...."

save it.

Done.

The are nice guides at doom9 homepage about ifoedit. But authoring is totally easy.

Tip: for chapters open the original ifo, select again the VTS_0X_X.ifo->VTS_PGCITI->VTS_PGC_X and then menu "file"->"save celltimes". This file you can import into authoring mode along with all audio, video and subtitle streams.
