Gods and Generals, very odd occurrence

I am trying to make a backup of Gods and Generals and when ripping the DVD, something very odd occurs: The first part of the movie is missing.
It rips vobs vts_01_1 to vts_01_8 plus the IFOs. The movie plays directly from the DVD perfectly.

I first noticed this when I used GK to make the backup and the movie started far down from the beginning. Oddly enough, I can play each vob individually and none contain the beginning of the movie, like it is on the DVD. I am using DVDDecrypter v 3.1.9.0 and selecting (F)ile and "main movie".

I cannot figure out what is wrong nor why I am missing the first part of the movie, nor where it is.

If you're using GK, you should be using IFO mode, not file mode. File mode is for copying the VOBs, which may have multiple PGCs and may have multiple angles, as well. It is not recommended for transcoding from DVD to other formats.

When selecting IFO mode, DVD DeCrypter will automatically select Angle 1 of the longest PGC, assuming it is the main movie. That is not always the correct assumption, especially if the main movie is contained in multiple PGCs.

Doom9's step-by-step guide for GK uses Robot4Rip, and in that case, IFO mode will be selected automatically. But R4R will still selected the longest PGC, and gives you the option of selecting alternative PGCs.

"select main movie" is not the most intelligent function on earth. Altho i usually use IFO mode, i confirmed the following behaviour also occurs in File mode: "select main movie" will just select the last program cell (same VTS #) that it thinks is long enough to be of interest.

I often have 3 to 5 OVAs on one DVD, DVD Decrypter always slelect only the last one. In you case this means: most likley you movie is split in 2 parts, and DVD Decrypter only selects the latter one. I recommend using IFO mode, there you just select all PGC's that are reasonably long . Im quite sure the one just above the one selected by DVD D. is the first half of your movie.

Thank you for the responses. I am still a newby at this. I guess I have gotten by with using the File mode due to backing up simple DVDs without a complicated structure.

The DVD you mentioned "Gods and Generals" is a two sided dvd or "flipper disc." Read this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=70296) for info on backing it up with Gordian Knot.

The search feature is real handy on these forums.

Actually I now use DVDShrink which preserves the whole disk of each one.
Although I like GKnot and AutoGK, I now prefer DVDShrink since I have the entire disks, although shrunken.
