[fixed] DVD Shrink 3.1: Major Bug?

I've experienced this strange behaviour myself on some movies (done with 3.0b5 and one with 3.1). Just before scene changes the picture get VERY blocky for some frames. This is really massive! It's reproducable and of course not present on the original DVD. The same movies done with DVD2one don't show this flaw.

Although it occurs not too often (maybe twice in some movies), it's so annoying and obvious that it totally distracts from the movie. I really think about stop using DVD Shrink until this matter is fixed... :-(

Anyone else with this problem?

Weeell, 6 people already with (almost) the same problem in the last 2 days! On top of that I've heard about this issue several times in different forums in the last few months with version 3.0b5...

Maybe somebody should post this in Shrink's official '3.1 Bug Reports' forum at:

Any screenshot like this is almost always bad source or burned on bad media.

Judging by the reports, there is a genuine issue here.

I need some more information:
Does this problem occur in re-author mode, full-disk mode, or both?
Does it always occur at chapter points?
List of DVDs for which this problem is known to occur.

Here is a bug report from two other members of another forum:

I just tried DVDShrink 3.1 and was disappointed. I tried the dvd "Selena" with JLo in it and I got an error message that said there was a copy protection error and it could not complete the job because of an I/O device error. DVDShrink 2.0 is able to handle this disk just fine. I am wondering if this is a bug in 3.1 or is it just me?

I got the same error as automagic on several disks. The disks work correctly using version 3.0 beta 5.

Has this bug been reported yet? Or already fixed in 3.1.1?

Guys, it's all well and good to talk about DVD Shrink bugs, but if you want them to be fixed why don't you try and help its developer? ;)

OK, one movie showing that strange problem that comes to my mind was done using Re-author/movie-only at around 67% compression (using 3.0b5).

The blocky frames appear around in the middle of the movie for like 1 second just before a camera angle/scene change change. It's just as bad as fileman's second picture in the other thread. Terrible! I don't think this is at the layer change either, because I can remember this is in the middle of a conversation where layerbreaks are rarly located. But I have to check with my original this evening to make sure...

What's very interesting too is that I did this backup using 3.0 beta5 and then additionally used DVD2one 1.3 on it to get rid of the layerbreak. That means that Shrink's IFO-files where completely renewed, just like making new ones using IFOEdit. But the blocky frames are still there! So I think the bad frames are really IN the videostream and the IFO-files are NOT responsible for it (like some other user suggested).

I've also observed that this "blocky-frames-problem" always occurs right before scene- or camera-angle changes.

Hope this helps a little bit...

I'm no expert, but I wonder if this could simply be the result of compression on video encoded with poor scene change detection and unfortunate forward-backward references in a B frame that straddles the scene change.

Some people have mentioned they never saw this in 3.0b5, but they didn't mention if they didn't see it doing the same movie, so that might be happy happenstance (or not paying close attention). I believe others have mentioned they have seen it in 3.0b5 and 2.3.

I wonder if it might not be a good idea for someone to do one of these problem movies in another transcoder, like IC or DVD2One, and see if they get similar results.

Just a suggestion.

Right now I'm in contact (via e-mail) with dvdshrink.

It has nothing to do with chapters, and nothing with layer breaks. There are at least four parts where my particular movie is corrupted, one time even the AC3 sound glitches very badly, so AC3Filter cuts down the volume for some seconds and raises it slowly to the normal value again.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I already tried encoding the same movie with 2.3 and beta5 - no errors.

Edit 2: Just gave 3.1.1 a try - the same errors (as expected).
