rough motion

I have now run some tests with xvid-beta3. The ratio of picture quality and compression size is truely excellent. Unfortunately motion looks anything else but smooth. Rather it looks like xvid achieves its outstanding picture quality by agressive frame dropping (looks like 12-15 fps) or is there is a problem with the direct show filter?

Are you using ffdhsow? Then disable it for xvid decoding. It has troubles playing back packed bitstream with more than 1 consecutive bframe.

You can also try to force another output color space.

I never installed ffdshow directly, but I'm using Matroska with ogg vorbis audio (because it is the only container supporting aspect ratio change) and the Matroska all in one package automaticly installs ffdshow. Using the Zoom player (which is not my standard player) I can see that indeed ffdshow is used and I have usually a bframe percentage of 60 to 65. On the other hand, if I use divx instead of xvid, then the divx logo comes up, which means that in this case the ffdshow filter is not used. How can I force my players to use the xvid instead of the ffdshow filter. Unfortunately I cannot uninstall ffdshow without uninstalling the entire Matroska package.

In Zoom Player, choose ffdshow from the filter submenu in the context menu. Then go to the "codecs" tab in ffdshow's configuration page (it's the very first in the list) and set the decoder to "disabled" for XviD.

That'll disable ffdshow just for XviD playback.

Alternatively, you could just disable the packed bitstream option in your encode settings (up to beta2 it was disabled by default anyway) and get a file that'll play fine with ffdshow.

The jerkiness is now gone. After disabling ffdshow as above Zoom player took the 3ivx D4 filter, which I could easily deinstall because I don't use this codec anyway. On the hand, because xvid was installed after all these codecs it should put itself ahead of these
codecs upon installation like divx 5.1.1.

search for "merit" to find out what priority a dshow filter has
