Divx 5.1.1 problem (random coloured blocks)

I think my codecs are corupted! I installed Divx 5.1.1 and also Xvid. Ok, they do encode using virtualdub, but there are patches of the screen yellowish/greenish like a rectangle at the lower right and a line along the left hand side. What did i do wrong? It seems to affect all the mpeg-4 codecs. I have uninsatlled/reinstalled the codecs themselves to no avail. How about removing the registry keys for mpeg 4? where are those? thanks for any help. I did not find this problem posted on the forum so i posted...

Before you do anything drastic, you might post the .avs you used. It could be related to the crop and/or resolution settings.

Hi-

You're converting a DVD to DivX, I think? So you're using GKnot or something to create an .avs to feed the encoder? So, somewhere in the movie folder there should be a file with the extension .avs. If it's GKnot generated, open it in Notepad and delete all the lines beginning with "#" (they don't do anything), and cut and paste it here.

Lets do some diagnostics. When you play a vob file, it's OK, or does it look nasty also? When you play the finished .avi, it's got the corruption? When you open the finished .avi in VDubMod, it's also got the corruption?

Exactly how did you do that? You aren't doing it directly in VDubMod, are you?

I think he changed the resolution settings in DivX's own settings not in GKnot.

Yeah, I hadn't thought of that, muskanteekeri. But he also said he had tried XviD, and you can't crop and resize in XviD's settings. So, unless he's using AviSynth to crop and resize, he must be doing it using VDubMod's own resize filters. Which is the wrong way to do it.

Ohh thanks for all the help. But i dont use this g-knot thing jsut plain ole Virtualdub and Divx codecs. It encodes no problem with huffuv compression but of cos thats not compressed enuf... so Divx and Xvid come in. Actuall im capturing from a composite video in from my VHS. The preview/playing(not recording) screens look fine. Its just after compression that it sux.
And yes i chinged the resolution in DIvx settings.

There are resolution restrictions by codec, by colorspace, and by your video adapter. All must be taken into account. "That Gknot thing" defaults to pixel resolutions divisible by 32 in width and 16 in height, which is usable with all MPEG-4 codecs, all colorspaces, and all video adapters, and provides maximum compressibility also. If you decide you're not going to use that GKnot thing, that's fine, but you should be aware of limitations and restrictions if you wish to do manual encoding.

Actuall im capturing from a composite video in from my VHS.

Would have been nice if you'd said that at the beginning. So, what's the capture resolution, what crops are you using, if any (left, top, right, bottom), and what resolutions are you using? Also, how many minutes of video are you compressing to how many CDs (1, I guess).

no crops, capture 640x480. Size is not that important since im capturing to HDD not CD. I will resize later if need but usually i save in a HDD. The thing is i just upgraded form 5.05 and then theproblem started... its been fine all the while.. thats the weird. part. I get the feeling that if i can get rid of all the registry settings for divx/xvid/mpeg-4, i can reinstall and all will be well.

I understand that you capture 640x480, and that you are not cropping. But I think you described using different resolutions. Are you resizing?

Would you clarify what filters you are using in plain ole Virtualdub? What is your final video resolution? You see, we don't have enough information yet to offer any additional advice than what we've already given.
