View Full Version : 5.1 OGG (with DS2/DPL2 info) for commercial use -- royaltees?

This may sound silly but I haven't found a definitive info on this. As far as I know, OGG is a royaltee free format, correct? But my question is this... If I wanted to make my own multichannel soundtrack/audio for, say, a commercial game, and decided to encode it as OGG 5.1 multichannel or DS2.0 downmixed (optimized with DS2 encoding and compatible with DPL2 decoding), would there be any royaltees involved with Dolby? Or is this strictly only if one uses an AC3 format?
I hope I didn't confuse anyone.
Thanks.

Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer, just speculating based on what I know and a few things I looked at on www.dolby.com
If you use a 5.1 Ogg, there should be no patents involved from Dolby.
If you encode a 2.0 ogg with Dolby Pro Logic information, a license from Dolby would probably be required. Even though you're not using AC3, the Dolby Pro Logic process is patented by Dolby.

Thanks. That's just what I suspected. I will investigate further though to be sure.
