Read rate dropped too low

Hello guys!

I have a WinXP system with 2 DVD-ROM drives (NEC-1300A writer and ASUS E616). Usually I used dvd decrypter for backing up some of dvds and dvd x copy for another ones and always had quite a nice speed of 4x or more than that for reading the files from DVD using DVD decryptor. A couple of days ago I have had some problems in Win XP freezing and had to make WinXP return to last properly working configuration (startup option). Now all the programs I used for DVDs work very slow, only 2x speed or so, I even tried same dvd disc which gave me a record breaking 8 minutes of full backup to harddisk now it only backs up in 25 mins. Same preformance drop evident in dvd x copy (was 23 mins now 45-50 mins). Any hints what can be done about this situation to return everything to normal speed?

XP has probably disabled DMA on your drive due to read errors.
There are several posts covering this so I wont go into to much detail but basically you can try changing the drive (or probably the IDE Controller) back to DMA mode for devices attached to it. Either that, or delete the IDE controller, reboot your pc and let windows find it again. You should then be back up to full speed.

At the moment your drive is in PIO mode. You wont rip any quicker than 2x in PIO mode and it will use up loads of CPU time.

i Have some kind of weired problem too.
I have 2 drives Plextor 708A(1.4 firmware)and a 52x cd writer from traxdata.

My OS is Win XP. P4 1.8Ghz. 768 Mb Ram and MSI 645Ultra (Motherboard)
To HD: 2x Maxtor 2x 80 GB
One of them(where XP is installed) is not in DMA mode, cant change it...


My problem is that decrypting with DvD decrypter takes ages. For a DVD with 7.3GB decrypter needs 1h and 20min.
Other problem is when i try to burn DvD's. I need for a standard R+ DvD nearly 1:00h in 8x mode..thats crazy..its a 8x writer for R+.
i have tried out variouse mediums. From PLEXTOR to PHILLIPS.

any suggestion??

Is your buffer always on 100% when reading and 0% when burning?
That'll be bacause DMA is on for the hdd.

Is DMA enabled on your burner?

If not, you wont read / write at more than 2x.

Like I said above, delete your controllers and let windows find them again. That 'should' fix it.
