View Full Version : AC3 -> mono HE-AAC or Ogg Vorbis?

In order to create mono HE-AAC files, I had been using BeSweet to decode ac3 files into stereo waves, manually adding them to Nero's "encode files", and then selecting "downmix to mono" under AAC settings. I want mono outputs because some of my DVDs are of older TV series. So far, the only way I have found to create a mono output using BeSweet directly is by changing the framerate to two times an original value. ie 25000 -> 50000 Without this step, the finished file will playback at 1/2 normal speed.

Is there any chance that native support for mono output will be implemented in the future? My trick works, however the 44.1kHz HE-AAC file this method creates sounds audibly different from the 48kHz version that is made when the wave is downmixed manually in nero. Further, is it possible to go straight to mono ogg vorbis from a "stereo" ac3 source?

Thanks for any insight.

You might be interested in this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=67746) thread. foobar allows you to directly encode from AC3 to a whole bunch of different media formats.

It sounds like you want to go from a stereo AC3 file to a mono AAC or Vorbis file. In foobar, make sure you go to the DSP Manager in the Preferences and activate the "Downmix all channels to mono" DSP. That should work nicely for you.
