Verbatim has announced that the DVD+R DL (dual layer) media will be available in spring at speeds of 2.4X.

How long will it then take to record a full 8.5GB?

Since 2.5X on current 4.7GB takes about 25 minutes. Will the 8.5GB media almost double this time to about 40 minutes? If so I will wait for faster versions since close to an hour is just too long.

2.4X DVD+R takes me 22 mins 4.37GB (full dvd-5). So I'd say 45 mins would be about the time it'd take. Which is what it took for 2X CD burners back in 1997. That's why I searched many stores just to find a watch with a timer (they were rare back then believe it or not) so I'd know when my 40 min burn of my cd was up.

JF,

I read that same article too. I am also curious to know if we are going to need a DL DVD R drive or our current DVD R's will be able to record on this DL media? I just bought my DVDR for Christmas, but if the DL media will need a DL DVDR drive, I think I'll return my current DVD R and wait till the spring....

Any input...

hi,

should take about 45min. like said above and afaik it will take
always that long regardless how much you gonna burn because there has to be the same amount of data on both layers. if you burn like 6gb the finalization will fill up the 2nd layer.
I hope I remember this correct ?!?

DVDKO,
Yes current DVD-R burners will NOT burn dual layer DVD-R when they come out. You will need a new drive to support the dual layer media writing.
