View Full Version : Few suggestions...

Here are few suggestions that I had problem finding information about:

1) What are the BASIC procedures when encoding a DVD? Audio encoding etc. (I see it this way that because I have the DVD on my shelf I can enjoy the movie without 5.1 sound if something happens to the DVD, but I want the picture quality be good.)

2) How does different codec options show in the final picture? Some rough samples in screenshots, please, they tell it in thousand words.

3) How do you pros test the quality before encoding for about 8 hours or more and how to see during the encoding that something is going wrong? I waited for 12+ hours to find out that if every pass is 1KB/s of video data it really means just that.

4) Is it possible to make a list of error messages and what they mean after they are anylized? Screenshots if possible.

5) How long does it take to make a 700Mb file using different hardware combinations (Users can then count it for how many CDs they want to make). What counts? Processor, RAM? Just some basic guidelines that someone doesn't encode for 25 hours and end-up with the same results as normally in 8 hours (with same hardware, of course).

I know that some of these are hard to translate to a newbie, but here's my input. Now I can only wish! :)

Keep up the good work!

The Guides (http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm)

Doom9 has recently released a new codec "shootout". Search around, it's not hard to find.

3) How do you pros test the quality before encoding for about 8 hours or more and how to see during the encoding that something is going wrong? I waited for 12+ hours to find out that if every pass is 1KB/s of video data it really means just that.
Try encoding a single chapter, instead of the entire disc. Minutes, instead of hours, spent.

4) Is it possible to make a list of error messages and what they mean after they are anylized? Screenshots if possible.
When you receive an error message, run a forum-wide search on the exact return, chances are, it's been dealt with previously. :)

5) How long does it take to make a 700Mb file using different hardware combinations...
This is hard to handle without specific input. Again, a forum-wide search will turn up many threads with good information on this topic.

Hi again!

Even though I know something about encoding, that tread should had been sent as a reply to the "newbie faq" thread.

Sorry about that, but this was something that could not been posted as notice to moderator.

So I have one comment,

THE GUIDES are little hard to understand for an unexperienced user. It took a long time to understand that what is the difference between GKnot, Nandub etc. Now (after couple of weeks) I understand that GKnot is a graphic interface and uses VirtualDud in encoding. I thought they were different, but same kind of programs.
