View Full Version : Strange DVD player behaviour

Well, I don't know whether this is really the right Forum for this thread, but since I used TMPGenc, my guess is that its close enough...

I recently converted a XviD AVI movie to DVD using VirtualDUB as frameserver to TMPEGenc - The source file is 23,976 fps (FILM) and TMPEGENC automatically encoded the MPEG-2 as 23,976fps (internally 29.97fps) with "3:2 pulldown when playback" and treated the video source as progressive.

The resulting DVD movie plays OK in my standalone but the timecodes shown on the display oscillate between two values - I guess this has something to do with said "3:2 pulldown when playback" but I can't figure out exactly what happened or how to fix this problem.

I have been able to work out a solution of sorts which is to encode the video at 29.97fps using "inverse 3:2 pulldown" and setting the video source to interlaced. I test-encoded a short bit of the movie and the timecodes on the DVD player now looked OK.

I couldn't find any discussion of this problem in the forums (but maybe it's just hard to search for) so I'd like to ask the advice of the experienced folks out there for an explanation and a solution for the problem I described.

Thanks in advance,

Pedro.
