View Full Version : Total confusion about Subtitle Filters

Hello

I would like to be able to view embedded subtitles in mkv and ogm-files and external Subtitles as well. Some time ago I installed DirectVobSub and SubTitDS and now it seems I need Vsfilter to view Matroska-Subtitles. The problem is that I have found nearly no reliable source of information about the function of each of these different programs - gabest.org is under construction and the matroska homepage does not even mention how to register vsfilter - and therefore I am currently a bit confused.

1. What exactly does SubTitDS do ? As far as I understand it is displays Subtitles and therefore seems to be not needed when I already have DirectVobsub ?

2. I have read that Vsfilter is a newer Version of Direct Vobsub but that they can be installed togheter. Is that true ? If yes, why should Direct Vobsub still be needed ? And how do I configure Font Size etc. in Vsfilter ? Is Vsfilter the only one of the three programs which can display Mkv-Subtitles ?

Bye

Hi major_kerensky and welcome to the forum.

If you look a few posts down there is already a thread on this subject.
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=67694

SubTitDS is to display subs in OGM, but if you use MediaPlayerClassic by Gabest, you won't need it installed to view the subs. In fact I don't even have OggDS installed and I can watch my OGM's fine in MPC.

To view embedded subtitles (i use srt) in mkv files, two files are needed from sourceforge/guliverkli page:

matroskasplitter.ax
vsfilter.dll

normal versions of these files for win9x,Me and unicode version for NT,2k,Xp

to install:
regsvr32 vsfilter.dll (same with matroskasplitter.ax)
uninstall:
regsvr32 /u vsfilter.dll

use this command line to access vsfilter settings:
rundll32 vsfilter.dll,DirectVobSub

create a shortcut whith that command, is useful

in "misc" tab uncheck all options.

Just go to Matroska FAQ in "MPEG-4 and Co." forum there are very detailed options to register and UNregister filters...go take a look...FAQ is the very first local to start just before ask :)

Thanks for your replies, I have read the Matroska and Ogm FAQ as well as the thread Hiro2k pointed out but it still seems not to work as I would like it and I fear I still have questions.

When it comes to Subtitds I have found two statements and now I am really unsure if I should keep this package or not. I have deinstalled it and still can view Ogm-Subtitles ( With Bsplayer, OggDs and DirectVobSub 2.23).

The Faq says :

03) Well, I did uninstall the SubTitDS-filters (or never had them installed) and playback is jerky

While in the thread I was pointed to I have read the follwing statement concerning the compatibility of Subtitds and Vsfilter :

> . i am pretty sure you still have Tobias' subtitds registered, so >you dont have to wonder if the two will interfere with each other.

Am I right in assuming that I should just see IF Ogm-Subtitles work okay without Subtitds and then just leave it deinstalled if it works ?

But I still don't know what Subtitds does exactly do. DirectVobSub and Vsfilter render subtitles - what does Subtitds do ? I want to avoid to have three programs for one job when Vsfilter itself should be able to everything just fine.

Another point : I have registered the Matroskasplitter and Vsfilter.dll successfully but it still does not work right.

If I deinstall Vobsub before installing Vsfilter I get an error message telling that the modul vsfilter.dll was not found after executing the command rundll32 vsfilter.dll,DirectVobSub.

If I leave Vobsub as it is I still get the error message when I try to configure Vsfilter.dll but the About Box of the Configure-Link of DirectVobSub creates says that now version 2.32 is installed and the layout of the configuration box is changed. Why is the File called vsfilter.dll when it is just a new version of DirectVobSub and even fits into the old version numbering scheme ?

I have tried to change the font size but while it changes the size of the subtitles in ogm-files it seems to have no effect on the size of matroska subtitles - as found in the sample at this URL.
http://matroska.free.fr/samples/mewmew/
I also get a rundll32.dll error message when closing the configuration menu.

Bye and thanks in advance for any replies

changing font in Vobsub/VSfilter or any renderer only affects the subtitles that do not have style information (and thus the default from the renderer is loaded). Subtitles that have defined subtitles are not affected by what you set in the renderer. Chances are the tokyo mew mew sample uses styled subtitles.

Ok enough already, lets give him some real advice. He should have used the search but hey at least he tried his best to comprehend the issue. I'll end your missery once and for all.

Go here download the Matroska Pack Full:
http://packs.matroska.org/

Install it, it will auto register the latest version of VSfilter.

If you want Direct Vobsub to work then install it first before you install the pack or else Vobsub will install an older version of VSfilter.

Also read everything here after you're done. Especially the downloads section:
