(SCSI) DVD Speed Stuck at 1.5x??

Hello, I have a Pioneer SCSI DVD-ROM 305 (Sot) and for some reason, I cannot read a DVD faster than 1.54x. VERY annoying.

Strange things happen when I use Nero DriveSpeed as well. When I use "detect speeds" the only speeds detected for CD are max and 16x and for DVD there is only MAX.

Nero InfoTool tells me that the system ASPI is corrupt (though the Nero ASPI is fine). I've looked around and it seems that it is because I use the newest Adaptec ASPI drivers; but the drivers themselves are alright. And I reinstalled the Adaptec ASPI drivers again to make sure. Mmm. This probably doesn't have anything to do with reading speeds, but does it affect DriveSpeed?

But in any case, with DriveSpeed turned either on or off, DVD reading speeds are awful. It stays at 1.54x and does not change.

I don't seem to have problems with other drives on the SCSI chain and it is well terminated (active) and the cable itself is of good quality and under the max spec lenght. Also, considering that speed is a uniform 1.54x and does not change from beginning to the end of the dvd (checked using Nero CD-DVD speed), it is probably not a termination/cabling issue.

Anyways, this is extremely frustrating.

Im not sure what scsi card you have but when mine was ripping slowly, I disabled something called 'Domain Validation' in the SCSI bios (Adaptec 29160N) and it fixed it.

ah, i have the exact same card. ;)

i actually do have it disabled; i had some problems with it before and it went away when i disabled it - i wonder what domain validation does and why it (seems to) have so many problems.

incidentally, are you the author of that program? i was just using it today and its a really nice program. congrats! :) can i ask how long it took you to make it?

epak - Hi - there's a known issues [not always, but often] with Adaptec hosts using the inbuilt MS-approved 'adpu160M.sys' driver & 'ultra-narrow' SCSI-devices - like your 29160/305S combo.

Symptom is the device [or devices] running at the lowest form of narrow-SCSI life - ie asych.

Update [from Adaptec's site] to the 'SP4' W2K/XP driver: version 6.1.530.201

- I have a 305S & UltraPlex40 on one ultra-narrow chain; & a Plex 12/10/32S & a Yam F1S on another [a dual-channel 64/66MHz host called the 396D] - they all showed these symptoms till this driver-update.

- the 305S now rips DVD9's at an average [heh] of comfortably over 7x . . . as I trust yours will again soon . . .
