Problems encoding Bad Boys 2 (DivX 5)

Hi,

I have no idea where to post this and I don't really know where to begin searching the forum for my answer so please forgive me if this has already been asked.

I am trying to encode Bad Boys 2 DVD to DivX 5.1.1 and am having problems with reaching full CD sizes. I always encode 2 copies of every DVD (700MB & 1400MB) but am having real difficulties with this one. I've also noticed that the framerate is set to 30FPS after ripping this DVD with R4R (I always get 24FPS with other DVDs). The codec is not maxed if that's what your thinking as I'm only getting 1200kbits bitrate at 2CDs.:confused:

I'm using the latest version of gknot (0.28.7) but I reverted back to VirtualDubMod 1.5.4.1 (previous version) because of CD splitting problems with the latest version. I've tested this setup and it works fine with encoding other DVDs.

Anyways... that's everything that I can think of to describe the problem. Any insight would be appreciated.

First thing I saw in the 1-CD log is that you are not doing compressibility testing. That can cause your trouble. See this sticky thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24584) in the DivX forum.

That "correct frame count" option is only selectable when you've selected IVTC. So, perhaps you edited your .avs script after Gknot created it? If so, please post the script. (Remove any comment lines that begin with "#" to make it easier to read, though.)

I saw the same frame count error in the 1-CD log.

I guess I need to learn a lot more about IVTC. I'm going to read the sticky you recommended and will get back to you. I only clicked it cause I wanted to force the project to 23.976 fps to encode with so I can squeeze more bitrate out of it. I didn't do anything else with the .avs file.

Changes:
- fixed occasional problems with subs split
- updated VDubMod and splitting now works correctly with 1.5.10.1 again
- correct version of DGbob.dll is packaged now

I've learned a lot about telicide and IVTC today and believe it or not, have already read the link you provided :) I'll try adding these lines to the .avs file and see if it will fix my problem.

However, this raises a few more questions that I have. Do these lines tell the codec (DivX5 in this case) to IVTC the file and if so, should the codec do this work? I'm sure I read somewhere not to let the codec do this work because it will produce a poor quality encode.

Also, isn't this why I'm getting undersized files in the first place (IVTCing a project from an NTSC source)? Should I be performing IVTC to the actual source (like Force Filming in DVD2AVI) and then loading the IVTCed project into gknot?

I dunno if I'm making sense... please forgive me cause I'm trying to absorb a lot right now :p

You seem a little confused on the encoding process, sidawg. Let me do a level set:

Step 1: When you creating a .d2v project, you are building a file with information about the MPEG-2 video stream in the .vob set. It's not the stream itself, it's information about it. Information about information is sometimes called "metadata."

Step 2: Frameserving. The AviSynth script is a text file that you can open in a text editor (or edit with the Edit button in Gknot's Save .avs window). But it is also a synthetic AVI file. If you open the .avs script in any avi player, or in VdubMod, you don't get text. Instead, you get uncompressed video, and, with some sources, uncompressed audio. The mpeg2source filter in the .avs script uses the metadata in the .d2v to extract and decompress the MPEG-2 frames in the vob set. The additional filters modify this video, with cropping and resizing for most DVD sources, with Gknot, and optionally with other filters, such as noise filters, deinterlacers, and the like. With your content (film source in NTSC, but not Force FILM-able), I would expect your scripts to have Inverse Telecine filtering, too.

Step 3: Encoding. The uncompressed video with all those filters applied is opened by VdubMod, and then simply encoded with your codec settings. Gknot will supply the bitrate value.

I hope this helped clarify things for you.

Your right, I am a lil confused about the entire encoding process but your explanation is a good starting point for me to understand it. I'm gonna search around doom9 and this forum for an explanation of how all these lil apps work together (like VDubMod, Nandub, AVIsynth, and the such).

BTW I think I'm getting a better understanding of what IVTC is and when to use it. Here is a link (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=68226) to one of my other threads in case anyone wants to see a real world application of IVTC and what kinds of gains you can expect in quality.
