What's the difference between ripping and decrypting ?

None. They're pretty much synonyms.

Technically I suppose you could say ripping is pulling digital data off the DVD, and decrypting is removing the CSS encryption, but that's splitting hairs in my opinion.

quite right ; nevertheless, I've seen members having some difficulties to play back their backed-up files : they simply were just ripped without being decrypted...
