avi splitting

before some1 jumps on me (for bring this subject up), i promise you i've spent a lot of time searching and going through a number of threads on this topic and haven't found any responces or information that solves problem/answers my question.

i'm encoding a long tv rip (around 2-3hrs) and want to split it up onto 3cds. I wants to fill each CD to its full capacity. Before this, i encode my video to a approx. 2gig+ xvid avi and encode my audio to a vbr/abr mp3. i then join them with Nandub and save the final avi. my problem now is splitting it into 700mb segments (to fill a cd).

I've attempted this two ways and both failed. 1st, i tried entering the number of frames into my pc calc and dividing by 3 (for 3 full cd segments) and saved each segment. This resulted with some segments larger then 700mbs and some under 700mb (since vbr is used for both video and audio, some parts of the rip take up more file size then others). Next i tried another approach by saving the final rip into segments with Nandub by 'File->Save Segmented Avi->file size limit 700mb->Save'. This worked perfectly for splitting the rip into 3 evenly (full) CDs. Problem is though, when you first open the 2ed and 3rd segments the first 3-5seconds are a completely grey-looking screen thats all boxed up. Screen shot below:

seems to me like nandub cutted on non-keyframes, have you tried with vdubmod?
or now that you know where to cut you can scroll to that scene and cut on the nearest keyframe

hey there. thanks for the fast reply.
Ya i tried Vdub and Vdubmod. Neither can deal with vbr mp3 audio and want to convert it to CBR before you can work with it. Your right, now that i know where to cut it I could segment it manually but I'm wondering if there is an easier way then that. Didn't think of that though and will use that in the mean time. But does any1 know of a better method?

Or you could use Matroska and split it exactly where you want to by using the --split switch without having any problems...;)

in vdubmod go to preferences -> AVI and check by default try processing VBR streams like nandub . from now on youll get asked if you want to keep the VBR header
